I had a lovely romantic weekend in VA. The trip down was not romantic (buses can't be, no matter what I've said before) but happily was cut short when the boy picked me up in Baltimore, where he happened to be at the same time I was because he had to drive his mom home after she visited him. So, instead of getting into town at 7 am, we rode together and got in at 3. We slept in and then wandered around downtown, where there was a decent free show by a Brazilian band from NYC (Forro in the Dark) going on. At this point Charlottesville was seeming very Stepford to me, and it still does, but we managed to meet just about every last Brazilian in the vicinity of Charlottesville that night. We were invited to celebrate the festival of So Joo the next day in Richmond, but we decided to stay home. We also met the boy's awesome downstairs neighbor, who I want to bring to New York so he can be my gay boyfriend. We asked him to meet us at the show and then we had a delicious Thai dinner at this quaint, weathered little house with a great big porch. He's working on his doctorate in comparative lit, and is from NC, so we geeked out about books and Southern history and cooking. We ended up going to a pretty decent club, and we got on so well that he even came by to see me off Sunday after lunch, like a proper Southern gentleman.

As for the boy...he asked several times if I wouldn't rather live there with him instead of in NYC, and in spite of the fun we had, the answer is still no. We went out Saturday and ran some errands, then lounged around at home listening to old bossa nova during one of the hardest rains I've ever seen. That night we shopped at my favorite supermarket (I really do love Krogering-they always play the best oldies!) and cooked a delicious Mexican meal together. He had all kinds of stuff to get done before his residency began, and I was a bit worried about the fact that I didn't help him more, but at the same time, I didn't come see him to be his maid or his mother. One of the reasons we split up before was that I felt used. I always felt like if I wasn't helpful he got angry at me. So, this time around I waited for him to get upset or be disappointed when instead of being helpful I was lazy and had lots of sex. It didn't happen. It felt like we'd both grown a little during our time apart. Or the sex made up for what he didn't get done.

Sunday we slept in and he made me a breakfast feast while I showered. My friend from downstairs came to see me off and the boy drove me to the station. I was sad to leave him but I know any guilt I feel is highly unreasonable. The boy is a doctor, and handsome, and quite the social butterfly. He'll have lots of friends by the time I visit him again.

I discovered a bossa nova singer I had never heard before while I was with him. Her name is Rosa Passos, and in this video she completely outshines the current Brazilian superstar, Ivete Sangalo, which is no easy feat when you see how tan, charismatic, and, um, luscious she is.
