I'd appreciate it if you could all stop being so interesting for a few months. I'm trying to concentrate, dammit. Thanks in advance. wink

respect and adoration! how sweet. i love your profile pic btw. where was that taken? biggrin
beledi:
i love Vancouver Island...well the parts i saw this summer anyway. i was there with my guy for a week...spent 4 days of that hiking on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. fell madly in love with it, with Port Renfrew, with Sooke, somewhat with Victoria, and want to go back again this year. i'd never been to the coast, let alone the coastal rainforest and i feel like i left a part of me behind when i went away. i have to go back again! i must!

sweet cracker sandwich! another biology geek! i'm currently working after finishing my undergrad honours (on raptor foraging in a fragmented landscape - sounds more exciting than it was). i'm doing a lot of PR work for a land stewardship program aimed at retaining habitat for Burrowing Owls and Loggerhead Shrikes. great programs, but some days i'm scared to death of people, so it's definitely not my dream job. it does pay the bills though, so it's alright for now. i plan to do my masters in the next two years however, hoping to focus on the american badger. i'd love to go somewhere in BC and do work, particularly the coast, but at this point in time my roots are here and i'm not wanting to rip them up. tell me more about salmonid evolution and were you at the Leading Edge conference in Victoria this summer?

happy new year!

Isolation is a funny thing.

I spent a month with (almost) no company other than a cat (did I mention that I'm not really a "cat person"?), and loved it. People keep asking me, "How could you survive a month without other people? Didn't it drive you crazy?"

Well......... no. I loved it. Coming back to "civilization" may yet drive me crazy, though.

I know...

hey! welcome back!

i was shocked and amazed to see your name back on my page.

any more stories of this amazing time alone? i often fantasize about telling everyone to fuck the hell off and leave me alone, but i know that would never happen.

what was it like, on a daily basis?

It appears that I have returned from a month in splendid isolation in the back-woods of British Columbia. Glad to be back in SG, although I can't honestly say I'm glad to be back in "civilization" in general. It appears that humanity has not improved its nature overall while I was gone, alas (based on reading the news WWW sites, etc).

Maybe on my next...

Well, I'm out of here for a while... on a trip during which I will not be "connected". I'll sign up again when I get back, most likely. Cheers, and it's been fun smile.

Cat people.

No, not the movie.

The site. It seems overrun with cat people. (I know, this is not a new observation.) I guess cats are not all bad. They eat rats, after all. smile

But where are the dog people? I'm a dog person. (Except I can't lick my own... well, never mind.)

I'll be spending time cat-sitting soon, so cats are on my mind....

"Rain, rain, go away...
Come again some other day..."

Or better yet, some other place. There are droughts in the world... send our rain to them. We can spare a few weeks of our rain for those more in need. In fact, the way things are going, we can spare the next few months' worth... smile

Finished reading "Quicksilver" (Neal Stephenson, 2003). Still don't really know what it is about. That is, I know what it said, but it didn't seem to add up to anything. His other books have at least a semblance of a plot with a beginning, a middle, and an end (even though, with some, you might have to read 300 pages before seeing where it's going)....

Point ta......hmmm...forget it. Honestly I was pretty much just venting and Im sure that I make it out to be worse than it is. But the important thing is that you bothered to post anything at all. In the end thats really what I needed. Just someone to say something, good or bad.
mattereaterlad2:
he's already finished the other two, but i think he's forcing you to wait a year for them...have i said this already?

re this way to the egress: when i was in elementary school, i did a book report on a bio of pt barnum. we all had to wear costumes. my mom even made me a bald wig for it.

"Quicksilver", by Neal Stephenson:

An odd book. I'm on page 650 (of 900), and I still don't know what it's about. Maybe it's not about anything. Or maybe it'll all come together in the last 250 pages.

Still worth reading, just for the dialog and the word etymologies. (There's also some entomology.) Stephenson should write plays or screenplays (as well as novels).

Side note: you'll...
