Your description of your older brother is what I'm afraid of. I purposely try NOT to have any luxuries so that my life does not become about them, only. While my colleagues bought sports cars, I bought a truck -- manual windows, manual locks, vinyl flooring -- just an engine and a cab.
Instead of getting expensive shirts, I get mine at Sam's club. My shoes are from payless and my pants are from Wal Mart. At the same time, though, I know that it's forced -- it's like I'm in denial of the direction that my life is heading and I'm almost afraid that without some violent upheaval... some mutiny of whatever captain is guiding me, I won't be able to stop.
I need a break from the world for a few days to think about this.
