So I didn't really explain the whole Steve Kilbey gig thing. It was at the Basement, right down near Circular Quay, the harbour end of the city.
I was there on my own, as the girl isn't a huge fan and the other gig-going people I talk with weren't up for it. (The one person I should've asked I forgot to, but that's another story.)...

I went to see Steve Kilbey (ex-singer of the Church) play tonight. It was interesting on a number of levels. I'll fill in the details when I have some time. Right now, bedtime calls.

Dude...do you realize you've lost hours of your life you'll never get back jumping into the fray of the gun debate? That's why i said i'm staying the hell out of this one. I think it's much better for my bloodpressure that way.
Now, sit back, relax, smoke a blunt and ride a kangaroo around to release some stress
Anyways...i don't even know why yous need guns down there. You have bladed boomerangs that'll take the scalp off of gangs of leather fetishists from a hundred paces.

So while I was in the UK, I wandered into a bookstore and bought a book I found called "The Essential Difference", by Cambridge University psychology professor Simon Baron-Cohen. SBC works in the area of gender behaviour -- how males and females differ. His book summarises much of the research and presents his particular theories of how we function, and how women and men have...

the porno thing?
I'm still grossed out by it. He still likes it. We ignore it.
I actually bought a Barley Legal to see what the fuss was about...
Some of those girls are way too young looking. I feel dirty. Its like my little sister doing porno. Must shower now.
but really at a closer glance I bet they are all pretty much in their early 20's... but look younger due to styling. Still creep show material to me. But hey, it sells so they put it out.
But at least he isn't into like... fucking dead people or somthing.. yeah... that would be worse....

Hi. I just revived an old thread about SG and body image in the feminism group, but I thought I'd contact you directly for your thoughts because I always respect your stances and reasonings and value your input.
Lately I've been struggling with the fairly undiverse images of girls SG markets and sells. I'm very much a sex-positive feminist, and porn obviously doesn't bother me. But most porn does bother me as a feminist, just like most advertising bothers me.
I know that there is a very human side to SG, but I can't help but feel like SG is fine being marketed and sold as a site of naked young, white, and often skinny girls. I know that all the girls on this site should feel no shame in putting their naked bodies on display, that's not what bothers me. It's SG as a whole having lots of similar looking girls, and thereby endorsing a certain image of beauty.
What are your thoughts on SG basically perpetuating a largely un-feminist idea of beauty by (maybe not purposefully) excluding many races, body types, ages, even styles, from membership as an SG? Thanks for any response you have in advance.

About damn time I updated, eh?
I have a longer update I want to make, about a book I've been reading but it'll take a bit of time to get that all together so I'll wait until I have the time to do that properly.
First things first. Big thanks to all the folks I met in London at the SGUK shindig at The Ship...

Wow I wish that thread didn't get closed just yet...I was gonna say, I can see people running out and getting their moms gift accounts for mothers day. "Mom leave a testimonial..."
ps: Do you think it might have been a smart-ass roomate doing that? My roomate went on my username (I forgot to log out) and sent a million friend requests to girls he thought was hot. I was majorly embarrassed...it just seems weird to come out of lurker and then say that

So, like, I'm driving with my girlfriend on Friday evening, towards the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney, for a weekend away. I'm saying to her that I'm planning to email an old friend about us -- and that he's fascinated by my "younger woman".
She asks what I'm going to tell him.
"Oh," I say, "that you're an aerobics instructor, and a part-time model"
"Not...

I posted the following long piece in the Male Club in a thread about masculinity. I thought I'd post it here.
----------------------------
Feminism has long had an issue with a male-dominated world and its oppression/suppression/exploitation of women. That's pretty much what feminism established itself to respond to and fight against. Radical feminists openly refer to a "male supremacist society", with its implicit suggestion of violence...

So I'm trying to get this trip to the UK next month organised.
On the UK embassy page (of the Australian government site), it tells me that the surnames of the senior consular officials are GOODLAD, COURT, and LOVE.
It's like a British public school and Wimbledon all rolled into one.

Meantime part 2: I've posted here about my girlfriend's capacity to mishear stuff. Good one today -- I said something...

OK, for those who wanted to know about the "psychopath answer" to why the woman killed her sister after meeting this great guy at her mother's funeral -- it was in the hope that he would turn up at her sister's funeral too.

I'm hoping that 4 is true. That would be sublime. (I stick by my choice of description).

Yes, that is a rather apt observation. I decided at a young age that I don't like the 'real world' and that the feeling is uncompromisingly mutual. Best for all concerned if I just flit from one university to another, gathering cats and horn-rimmed spectacles as I go.
A bunch of you who comment in my journal probably weren't around when I was posting the "why I love my girlfriend" entries here last year (before I moved up here and moved in with her). In particular, you probably missed the Double Leter Episode at a Japanese restaurant last year.

Conscious, theoretical essentialism, or people arguing inherently essentialist precepts without understanding what they're doing? Last I checked (and admittedly its been awhile) academic feminism has been wrestling with the fact that it wants to be dogmatically relativist when it suits them and essentialist when it doesn't.
And no, Sean hasn't invited me to HQ for cocktails yet, nor the Thucydides group, although I am eligible. Honestly despite our alpha personality clashes, he and I aren't that far apart on most issues, we're just violently and diametrically opposed on a few contentious ones. I think we also arrive at concord by very different paths.

Haa - it actually does make me feel better that even a musician is intimidated by gearheads. There is just something about them that terrifies me! I am usually nervous in dealing with boyfriend friends as a general principle, but these guys scare me more than just the normal social anxiety aspect. They just....have this little world that separates them from the rest of the world. And the boy's place in their world is different than his place in mine, so when I'm there, these two worlds seem to clash, and their's wins out. Bah.
I am loving the Slut group, by the way.
