I'm 44 - my Dad turned me on to his Hank Williams Sr records AND took me to see Duke Ellington's Orchestra in 1973, then gave me his early guitar hero records (Duane Eddy, Jorgen Ingmann, etc) and by the late 70s I was collecting live and unreleased music of all sorts, and began hanging with hippy types in the Quaker school I attended.

As for mecha anime, I'd recommend the original Macross. Mobile Suit Gundam (another original from a long time ago), Gundam Zero Zero, Neon Genesis Evangelion (a serious head trip, remember to pack your zoloft for this one), oh and Gasaraki.
