Hey! I got my first rejection!
It's a bummer, but it's not a huge deal. Most journal submissions are rejected. And the version I sent it, it was a bit of a stinker. That said, I got some really great feedback: some data things to try, a suggestion to expand the dataset, a theoretical frame to explore, and a few historical details to include/sweep away....

Editing is more fun when:
1) Your chapter does not suck ass
2) You know what the fuck the chapter is about.
The more you know, kids.

obd:
indeed.
So, you know, been busy and stuff. Two weeks ago, I checked out Wizard World Chicago and blew a wad of cash on comics. Over the Fourth weekend, we did the Taste, saw Wanted, and spent Sunday taking a walk by the lake. Summer is great.
I have switched almost all of my daily web browsings to Google Reader. Which is sweet. Ironically, it makes wasting time harder. I click over to reader, see there are no updates ... and, um, I guess it's time to get back to work?
We'll see how long this lasts.

Like I said, not having the phone totally screwed up my ability to reach out to anyone.
Funny enough, you were probably the only person that I knew would be there that I did not actually run into. Not helping was actually having work to do this time around.
Sorry, bud!

Thank you

I'm ambivalent about Chicago getting the Olympics. I can see how it could do a lot of great things for the city (improving the trains, leaving some great new facilities in its wake). But I'm sure it can also fuck some shit up (like moving lots of poor people out of their current houses, screwing up current parks).
What I do want to know is:...

The Olympics, if we get them, will be one of the most savage fucking civic trainwrecks this nation has ever seen.
I pray we get passed.

Maybe it can be leveraged into an el line along the lake front?
Outside of how *good* of an idea member comments being used to determine which sets go "live," I don't really get the *concept.* As in: the set is already available for me to see, and I look at it. Then I give a comment. Once it goes live, am I supposed to look at it and comment on it again? What is my responsibility as...

It's about getting more content up for less money; which of course translates out to less quality...
I have never been happy with what the member review concept has done to/for the site, it seems to help attract a type of person who is the exact opposite of what I came here to see.

Definitely! I have an actual assignment or two on Saturday, but I will have my cell phone with me to touch base!

Things are better. Being back at work heals all wounds.
dreamergirl:
Im sorry I dont know what all happened because I had 3 suitcases of drama myself. I hope all is well my friend.
cheers

That sounds bad. But you sound cheerful.
New gear: Meh. I want it to work. Transparently. And I bitterly resent being forced to buy stuff.

Perhaps the hardest part of being a graduate student is the constant *negative* feedback. It's obviously the only way you get better, but bit by bit - it chips at you. What makes it so hard is that it's *really* hard to disassociate yourself from your work. It's *your* interest, *your* idea, and *your* time (hours upon hours, until those become weeks upon weeks) that...

All of which goes to show, you are learning. Not necessarily what your teachers wanted you to learn, but... Going forward. Kudos.
Though I am by no means a "completist," I'm a big fan of Denzel Washington. I'm not sure of any other actor who somehow so powerfully equally radiates fierceness, intelligence, and charisma. Plus, he just does *stuff* - he's just so natural in the way he stands, moves, and speaks. It's positively enthralling.

Oh definitely not. Nor TV, either.

Well, I tend to think that everyone does

Things: they be fucking good.
I scored myself a fellowship, the wife loves her internship, and hey - most important of all - my dad was having some tests done and they came back all clear.
The weekend is earned this time around, dearies.

Hey Signal, that sounds good. I need myself a post-doc. We shall see what happens. There are some good looking things suddenly popping on my radar, the trouble is they're in Switzerland, and the girl is in Seattle.
ojaeflo:
Outstanding, sir.

Waiting to see if you got money that you're pretty sure you didn't get pretty much sucks.
But if this is the worst part of grad school, I can live with it. It's annoying though, because we had talked about taking a trip to NYC this summer. Since I've struck out on 9 out of 10 fellowship grants, that's looking less likely now.

No, no, that was a fair comparison. I'm basically doing the same sorts of experiments day in and day out, so it gets pretty repetitive. Still, probably a step above a lab tech, depending on the research lab--I do get some degree of creative input, and I'm able to go to conferences and I'm gaining a lot of knowledge about the pharmaceutical industry that I never would have had otherwise. Still kind of monotonous and not really what I want to do, though.
Good luck to your wife in her studies, though.
If you're ever looking at moving east, I happen to know of an extremely good, if small, pharma company (both in the sense of good to work for and good business practices, unlike some soulless big-pharma *coughMerckcough*).
More on topic, though, one of the biggest things I miss about school was teaching. I don't get anywhere near the joy out of anything in my life right now as I did from teaching. Good luck with the grants and teaching stipends, though.

Ha! I've applied for so many grants and never actually gotten one. I know exactly what you mean.
So yeah, I'm moving to Cambridge for my (real) postdoc. I don't really count the last year, it's been all just tying up loose ends.
How have you been? Any closer to that elusive light at the end of the tunnel? And when are you coming to NYC? I'll be in town until the first week in July, would be great to get a drink or something if you're going to be around.

It actually was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made, but that's not the point--procrastination baby.
