Thanks for you comments. We already decided to give it another try, so putting that off is not an option. Being broken up but staying close might work, but we tried that once (when she first moved away) and we ended up back together pretty fast. I have a lot of thinking to do either way. I guess I figure that if it still doesn't work out, she won't be so shocked.

Just as an aside, I actually encountered the most vitriol about immigrants from the *Democrats* I worked with on canvassing and such. Remember that one of Kerry's major planks was, "I'm not going to re-educate you to reclaim competitive advantage, I'm going to make sure that companies get punished for giving your jobs to furriners."

Now, granted, that's probably because I a) wasn't near the border of anything except Canada, and so immigration was a smaller and more idiosyncratic issue and b) the Republicans want cheap labor with few rights, but still.

I like your ideas on nonviolence - is there a paper I could read? Actually, I just commented to prodigalsaint that we needed some way of protesting the citizenry... sounds like your ideas have potential for thinking of new tactics.

I think you're reading too much into this situation: I don't think people are thinking about anything; Clinton got re-elected after everybody knew for sure he was a total sleaze ball. People don't like change, even when it benefits them. Especially not in this country; if a new administartion comes to power, it will upset the way everything was set-up to work before, and then we can't depend on it and have to become self-aware again for a moment and not just depend on a familiar system.

It has certainly filled the void left with no killer HBO shows on Sunday night for the foreseeable future. No Sopranos until 2006 (and why, I will never fucking understand), and Six Feet Under stopped being must-see for me the last two seasons (though I will still watch it if I'm home doing nothing else).

Desperate Housewives has been a thoroughly entertaining show. It's best when they play for laughs.

I really think that this is about to be my first "life crisis." I don't know if you'd call it a young adult life crisis or mid life crisis. I haven't had a freak out over my age yet and always just took my birthdays in stride. I'm not going into my 36th year quite as easily.

As for my freind, he has a short temper, and I experienced it for the first time last weekend. It was a simple disagreement, and he blew up at me. Started saying all kinds of things...and it scared me and made me cry. He said that he is just that way, and I need to get used to it. Like, he thinks that it is okay and that I only need to understand that he just talks loud and says stuff he doesn't mean when he's upset, and I should just know that-and not take it personally. But, I don't like that kind of anger directed at me, and I don't think I can ever "get used to it." But I love this guy. Ugh.

Right now, I'm taking a class on Latin American societies and globalization-I would like to take more classes on Middle Eastern and African Politics. The thing about transfering is that I would be giving up my ability to study abroad during the school year. I think that universities want a student to spend at least two years at their institution. If that happened, I would probably choose a summer program-I know of one in Jordan that focuses on governmental structures. Thanks for responding to my post!
