I have all these internet friends, people I talk to and whatever, from various fora. I rarely get to meet these people, and I'm always a little nervous at the prospect. Need to be very comfortable with them at a virtual level before I want to, say, shake their hands. Assuming they have hands.
So last night I met one of the people I'm most...

Look me up when you're in norCal. I, too, have hands.
I had the unique experience last night of reading a complicated urban fantasy story to a group of old people last night, and have them critique it. I can summarize their response: I don't understand. Pretty, but I don't understand. They said there were two man characters. There were four, though I had one confused critiquer list for me all the characters, and she found...

That must have been interesting. It's so strange how much things like age and generation can affect the way people interpret things.

I haven't felt like that in years. I've begun to think I might be too old to feel that hungry. Then again, if I think back to the last time I felt it, I was unemployed and really had nothing better to do.
Okay, so, the query letter and writing sample are off to my first choice agent. I'm trying not to think about it, because it's one of those things where maybe in three weeks my whole life could be radically different, but in the mean time I can't do anything about it.
What I am doing, in the interim, is indulging in some vintage science fiction....

Well, I'm crossing my fingers for you on the publication.
I will have to look into the Pelbar Cycle. I haven't read any sci-fi in quite a while. Sadly, I'm trying to remember what I did last read that wasn't internet related. sigh.
I do have to chuckle about the cover art. Do artist read? Huh, I thought they just made pretty drawrings.

Here's aSin City drinking game for you: Everytime there's a castration, drink. That'll do ya.
Great movie.
Great movie.

Oh my god! You ruined the plot for me!
Kidding, of course. I've read all the books.

Man! I so want to see Sin City! I used to read the comic AGES ago.
Yeah, I've been away for a bit. I tried a short stint on myspace, but the people there aren't as cool as the SG members. I think I'm going to renew my membership for a year this time... there's no place like home. There's no place like home.

I'm writing my cover letter, I'm going over my synopsis, my 'first five pages', I'm reviewing my list of names picked so carefully. Putting it all into envelopes, stamping and sending off. It's a little bit like wrapping christmas presents for yourself, only there's so much more riding on this.
People, I'm going to get an agent. Honest. I hope.

Good luck! Honestly. I have yet to assemble anything I want to submit for anything, so you are past that marker.
Don't look back.

My mentor says nothing gets published without an agent these days. I'm not quite to that stage yet, but it's inevitable.
I'm in this weird creative lull, like the waves of the first book and the next book are on both sides, and I'm just bobbing around in the middle. Or something. I've got most of a short story written, but it won't get done for a few days. It's not even a story, honestly. More of a character sketch. I had some ideas, and I...

I have only recently discovered the misery of yardwork. I have a house now, which is great, but it has a giant backyard, which is not so great. Giant yard with giant weeds, currently. Except for my front lawn. It's all brown and patchy for some reason.
Fucking weather.
Fucking weather.
I'm getting glasses. Reading glasses, to be specific. I spend eight or nine hours each day in front of this computer, then I go home and write (usually longhand, but sometimes transcribing longhand into electronic) and whatever time isn't spent in those two activities usually goes into reading.

Its cool that you met Mr Mieville...I met Matt Stover at a signing he did...I loved his NJO book and I've read a couple of other things he wrote which I liked. It was actually in an interview he did where he said that China Mieville was one of the best scifi authors right niw that moved me to buy Perdido Street...
Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading your work, considering the great infuences you have...
Plus, writing longhand is cool!

They should just release a DVD of the Star Wars movie trailers... along with Clone Wars. That'd be cool.
Well. I've just returned from a trip home. Dad had cataract surgery last week, and I went home to ride familial herd. It was...trying. The whole week, the only people I had any contact with were retired missionaries or theological hermits. I got to hear about the homosexual agenda. I got to listen to my mom's neighbor talk about her daily shift on the sidewalk...

Shoebox ministry eh? You should do a load with a bottle of whisky and a copy of Harry Potter instead. I'm sure it'd go down much better!
Heh, it's not like I really do that much gaming. Well, ok, maybe I do, but it's only really one night a week, and maybe another one day a month proper RPGing. Plus one night a week playing cards and some PC or PS2 action here and there too. Well, ok, maybe that is quite a lot. *shrugs* Hell when you're living on your lonesome what else are you gonna do with your time...?

Well, for reasons complicated and familial, I'm off to Carolina for a week. Or so. I'm in the awkward position of just barely getting along with my family, as long as there are several states and a handful of accents between us, but prolonged exposure tends to bring out the bad. That said, they're good people, and being good back to them is the least...

I'm really close to finishing the first and a half draft of my novel. It'll probably happen today, if I keep at it. It's been slow at work, and I'm just working on the book for a while. I'm a longhand writer, so the handwritten manuscript constitutes the first draft. That was done two months ago, the first and a half draft is that longhand...

Yeah, and it sucked nuts.
I stayed here with a friend for about 6 months and then moved to Austin, where I lived off my severance and unemployment until it ran out.
I applied for jobs all over the country, and what's the only one that came through? Back in this hellhole.
One of these days I'll escape again.

Good luck on the editing. I'm currently in editing-mode with one of my scripts. Joy. Editing hurts my brain.

I've had a bad weekend. Not bad, like my car got stolen or I was sick or anything. Bad like an artist bad, bad like I've been too maudlin for my own good and the good of my family. I've spent a lot of time questioning the wisdom of my past choices. For reasons too complicated to get into, I started making grave tactical errors...

A thread from the English Usage group was about the difference between flammable and inflammable. Got me to thinking about words were the root makes the word look like its own negation (in this case, inflame)
