"People pay for what the do, and still more, for what they have allowed themselves to become. And they pay for it simply: by the lives they lead."

-James Baldwin

I've had a busy last couple days, but it only took H.D. Thoreau one nite.

the Nazis, Japanese, British all tried it w/ miliatry might, Americans try it w/ corporate and economic might. i wonder...

hey there. glad my journals take you home a bit. that makes me feel not quite so silly for writing them. wink

i'd love to hear more about the protest stuff. most of what i got out of the trib was that there was some shit (sort of just arresting groups on the people, some arrests for not doing much of anything), but that for the most part the nypd was being good and things at the holding cells going smoothly. i'd really like to hear more about what went down - when ya get the chance.

so are you protesting the RNC? what's it like out there? i've read up on it - but i haven't followed much on TV, so i have no sense at all of what the protests are like...
lily:
isn't it ironic? yeah i really do think nigga. not that i'm glad you sat in a jail cell or even that i think you could even still understand what REAL jail is like, anyways i'm just happy you're here and home with me. i hope your cough gets better.
I love you much.

there are those who love you.

there are those who love you and are in love with you.

there are those who think they love you but are only infatuated with you.

there are those who make you think they love you b/c they want something from you.

...can you tell the difference?

but life would be so boring if we could predict everyone's influence on us straight away, wouldn't it? easier though
i haven't got my pics back yet, but i don't think i even got any of you. that sucks. i'm back home. it's anticlimactic
take care of yourself because it's easy to get caught up taking care of others

You often dont know what kind of impact someones had on your life until its too late. Of all the people youve come across and all their lifelines zig-zagging across yours, there are usually a couple that stand out b/c, unknown to you at the time, their profound effect is something you never could have imagined. For me fortunately, that wasnt the case w/ N-,...

how not to live:

"Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work,
driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for,
in order to get to a job that you need so you can pay for the clothes,
car and the house that you leave empty all day in order to afford to live in it."

Ellen Goodman

good quote.

the goodman quotation is good - the jung one is great. more academics & other people who think they know stuff could stand to remember that. (god knows i'm guilty of forgetting it way too often already...)

"Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."
And when he...

"it is better to die standing than to live on your knees."

"The question is one of fighting the causes and not just the effects. This revolution is bound to fail if it doesn't succeed in reaching deep inside them, stirring them right down to the bone, and giving them back their stature as human beings. Otherwise, what's the use?"

powell's is great too - but i have to say, for some reason i've always preferred new books. old books are great b/c they're cheap, and they have such a good smell. but i dunno - something about cracking the spine on a new book.
but powell's yes. that's another black hole that i plunge my cash into wink

diamonds from coal, glass from sand.
it takes a lot of heat and pressure to make something so mundane turn beautiful and grand.

shakespeare would've loved to have met you, written about you. a tragic comedy, only there's no one laughing.

i'm waiting for you, catapillar. butterflies arent just made, they are reborn.

yea, i know i know .. u of c, elitism etc. it was actually something that i didn't really like about the school at first. - i'm a state-school product (illinois state was where i got my BA & MS - i didn't even go to a *good* state school). sometimes the pride i take in my new school really upsets me. at the end of the day - it's not that big of a deal i know. but i find it disconcerting at times - i actively work to avoid it.

"Games"

I know I'm being followed by invisible men
Life is good, but why am I so miserable then
I'm second guessing my every decision
But my hand is guided with heavy precision
I can't even trust my own eyes
But actually everything I do is done with pin point accuracy
At least once a week I come this close to dying
But nothing ever...
