Maybe if you keep grooming but volunteer at a shelter or something it will make working at an animal hospital a little less intimidating?
I volunteered at a shelter for a while. I didn't have much contact with the animals though. I sewed bandanas for the doggies and beds for the kitties.
Doing things for animals feels so much more fulfilling to me than doing crap with people.

I don't get me man---all I want to do is hang out, but when I am out with people I get all strange. I keep to myself, It's not like I freeze up.. I can converse with anyone easily. I just feel strange and think about wanting to get home. WTF??!?!?! I don't know....
