Soo co-opted. The thing about alternative culture is where it comes from. If it comes from an executive working in a media conglomerate based on the last PowerPoint presentation he saw, then you can be pretty sure it isn't authentic. So, when what we understand to be "alternative culture" has been completely taken over, there will be a new "alternative culture" to respond to it. Just like how the groovy/revolutionary culture of the 60's ended up being totally lame and required a punk revolution, so too will what we used think of as "alternative" become mainstream (thanks, VH1!) and there'll be a new wave of - I don't know what, since most of the kids who will defy it are still a bunch of little kids. But rest assured, they'll kick our asses and make us look lame. It's the circle of life, yo.
