Tonight at work for a brief second I started looking forward to going to Chumley's, my bar back in Lafayette, before I came back to myself and remembered I'm in Austin, Texas now. Chumley's was my place: I could go there to write, to lounge around after work, to watch sports, or to see people I knew because everyone I liked went there as opposed...

You know, this week really started off perfectly. I went to sleep Saturday night, then when I woke up on Sunday, thus beginning the week, it was to the sound of my phone ringing. It was my manager at work, telling me I was supposed to open instead of close, as I'd thought, and that I was already half an hour late. That beginning perfectly...

Barack Obama is the man. If he doesn't win the Democratic nomination I seriously may consider not voting, which for me would be a massive deal. I've already decided I would only vote for the president and state positions this year; I refuse to cast a single vote for anyone running for U.S. Congress. This Democratic Congress has proven to me that it doesn't matter...

If Obama isn' the nominee, I'll probably vote 3rd party. Or I'll write in Donald Duck. If it's Romney vs Hillary, I might even almost be tempted to vote for Romney. The idea of at least 4 years of Hillary is indeed that scary to me. eeek skull
ash:
Yeah, I knew u would mention your love of obama in my journal, I hate to say that Im on any democrats side right now because I know if I say I love obama he'll definitely lose the democratic vote, so I try to say I like hillary just so obama wins, haha. I think things would actually change for the better if he were elected, and it pains me to think he might lose, because this is the first time in history of ash that Ive ever felt so optimistic abt any candidate.

Anyways, u best watch your ass at work! I know, u know your work better than I, so you're probably already being careful. When u work someplace long enough, u know what u can and cant get away with. But congrats on the ass kicking! I didnt know u were writing TWO fucking novels at once, are u mad? Or do u just need to for school? Which one is coming along the fastest? I'd think it would be easier to write a teen novel than for an adult, but what the hell do I know abt writing?

If writers are anything like artists/models ... then there are a zillion scams out there that want your wallet like nobodies business. Id be so afraid of throwing away $$ on something that didnt help my career progress! Good luck with that, I trust u know what you're doing.

For some reason last night I found myself thinking about the 7/7 bombings in London, when I was over there for a study abrad trip in 2005. I had been staying in a hotel in London, visiting my sister and her husband (who live there) before going to Oxford for my study abroad term. We didn't have classes on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays, and on...

All right, last night's blog entry was written during one of my random bouts of depression, so I figure I should put something else on here tonight to counter it a bit. Colts lost today, of course, which sucks, but oh well. As I told someone earlier, if being a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan has taught me anything it's how to handle losing. Plus I...

Man, it does seem like u have an awful lot to be happy abt. I always do that .. try to imagine how things could be WORSE than they are, it makes me feel less depressed. Or i just do what u do and think abt the things I have to be happy abt. No use stressing abt your grad school .. theres nothing u can do abt it now. you're either good enough, or you're not! the worst they can say is NO. They cant say theyre gonna steal your gf and your job or assfuck you, right? those things are definitely worse than getting rejected! lol

I say, if you feel like you are especially creative right now .. skip the fuckin lame part with the boat. why WASTE your creativity??? Write as much as u can while u can, because u might just run into writers block soon. THEN u can do the research on the boats appaearances because thats the least fun part, and u can do that while you're having writers block. Right? Right wink

I got into a "discussion" (not for the first time) with my aunt tonight about my inherent cynicism. I tend to believe that the "bad guys," for lack of a better term, tend to win in the world more often than not. I have strange criteria for this, though. I look at Hitler, for instance, who eventually was defeated but took the easy way out...

From Stephen Colbert's Commencement speech given at Knox College

Now will saying "yes" get you in trouble at times? Will saying "yes" lead you to doing some foolish things? Yes it will. But don't be afraid to be a fool. Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly just cynics. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying "yes" begins things. Saying "yes" is how things grow. Saying "yes" leads to knowledge. "Yes" is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say "yes."

I have been living by this a lot lately.

I know what you mean about Sam. I swear, it stirs me as well.

WARNING: long post, on a variety of topics on my mind at the moment, and it's entirely too honest to be posting for people that don't really know me, and most people will probably stop reading pretty soon, but here goes anyway:

I decided tonight that I'm going to volunteer to work with Texans for Obama. I don't know what they need, but I can...

I was driving with my dad through downtown Philadelphia tonight (and was quite impressed with how he's learned to be a "city driver") and we started talking about my mom's Hepatitus C. Apparently it's a lot more serious than I (and many other members of our family) was lead to believe. She'll be undergoing some sort of experimental treatment near the end of January (a...

I feel like throwing up as I write this, so go me. I've been applying to grad schools over the past few days, and the only thing I can't control is, of course, my letters of reference. I had lined up three professors who agreed to give me referrals, but I haven't heard from two of them in at least a month and the only...

One of my writing professors got into Brown on letters from members of her writing group. She'd been out of college for a few years though. If you have people who know your writing really well and you're desperate I'd go with them.

I went back to see some friends in Indiana last week, and for my best friend's wedding (though I'm about 90% certain her new husband is gay, and I'm afraid she'll be the cover wife who has to get divorced at 35, but that's another story). I have several different groups of friends back home, but I really only felt like a part of one...

hey you should try coming here to good old chicago. Good group of people we have here. When i lived in Utah and earlier in life in Tennessee for a short while.Describing the weather in chicago scared the hell out of everyone lol.
ash:
Good 'ol J&H, it's so good to see you on my page again smile

Are u really serious, u truly think this chicks husband is gay? What a fuct up situation, jeez. I dont envy your position as a friend to her, are u gonna .. uhm .. mention it to her, maybe? I hope she isnt too blind to the situation to have just married a gay man, lol, maybe she just likes femme guys, who knows?

Moving in your junior yr of HS must have been so shitty!! In HS u think your friends are the most important thing in the world, that must've been so tough on u. Hell, it was tough on me moving when I was 21 across country, so I can relate a bit, but you're just moving all over the fuckin place, arent you? Hopefully you'll get accepted to the texas university so u dont have to jossle your surroundings so much. texas has some really awesome ppl there, really. A lot of my closest and coolest friends came from there, and I still talk to a lot of ppl online that are from TX that rule, so maybe you're just not going out as much as u should or going to the right places? Who knows? Didnt u join the sg tx grp? ttys hun biggrin

I went to the funeral of my family's friend today. He was in his 90s and expecting to die at any time, but apparently he had been saying that since 1978. I've been to several funerals, most of them in the past year, but as I looked at his body I realized this was the first one I'd been to with an open casket. It...

I know how you feel. I feel the same way at funerals. Even if its someone you are close to. You stand there looking over them wishing you had one more hour with them Or wishing that you could just say something to them or go back and NOT say something to them. Its sadly the way of funerals. Life will move on though for you and possibly for them depending on your beliefs. Cheer up you still have people around you. Friends and family. Cherish them and the time you have to spend with them.
