A really significant goal? I don't think I have anything lofty, but losing 40 pounds feels very significant right now. smile

Regarding yesterday's conversation, here are some books for you.

These cover essential requisites and give a large vision of film:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

  • How To Read a Film: multimedia edition, by James Monaco - It includes 4 books and zillions of resources and multimedia;

  • The Art of Watching Film with CD-ROM, by Joe Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie;

  • How Movies Work, by Bruce Kawin;

  • Understanding Movies (latest ed.), by Louis Giannetti;

  • Film Art w/ Film Viewer's Guide and Tutorial CD-ROM, by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson.

Proper film theory:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

  • The Major Film Theories: An Introduction, by J. Dudley Andrew;

  • Concepts in Film Theory, by J. Dudley Andrew;

  • Film Theory: An Introduction, by Robert Stam;

  • Aesthetics of Film, by Jacques Aumont et al.;

  • Introduction to Film Studies (latest ed.), by Jill Nelmes (editor) - It works as a complement.

The volumes below have a variety of articles by classical or contemporary film theorists, some much heavier than others. I avoided whole books by classical theorists at this time, rather focusing on diversity of viewpoints:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

  • Film Theory and Criticism: Introductory Readings (latest ed.), by Leo Braudy and Marshall Cohen (editors) - This one includes a lot of classical stuff;

  • A Companion to Film Theory, by Toby Miller and Robert Stam (editors);

  • Film and Theory: An Anthology, by Toby Miller and Robert Stam (editors);

  • Film Studies: Critical Approaches, by John Hill et al (editors);

  • Movies and Methods: Vols. I --II, by Bill Nichols (editor);

  • Philosophy of Film and Motion Pictures: An Anthology, by Nol Carroll and Jinhee Choi (editors);

  • French Film Theory and Criticism: A History/Anthology, 1907-1939. Vols. 1 -- 2, by Richard Abel (editor) - As it says: All classical and all French.

The beginning of the recommendations, hehe!

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

  • The Haunted Screen: Expressionism in the German Cinema and the Influence of Max Reinhardt, by Lotte Eisner;

  • Fritz Lang, by Lotte Eisner.

Ah! Regarding significant goals...

I can't tell.

that is really cool. He really is a good speaker. It gives me a little hope for the future. I just hope that even if we get a good president in the upcoming election that people don't think "we've made the change" and return to a state of complacency. Lately things have made me look at the state of the world and think that people need to get proactive and change direction. I dunno. One can hope i suppose.

i really enjoyed that video... thank you! As for what he's trying to do... Well i think there is a certain sense of spirituality and faith that is important to have within one's self (separate from organized religion and the like) if people are to be empowered and try to really do something with their lives. Maybe he won't change the world, but he certainly evokes a certain passion or emotion that has been known to bring out the most amazing things in people...

oh. and on the note of that book.. I fear it may have slipped under my bed or otherwise into obscurity and i've been distracted by a dozen other things i've been up to. But i can proudly say i have read two books in the last month so i'm not just some lazy bum who doesn't read! biggrin

i had an informal job interview. and it went good. i like the job. i just REALLY REALLY REALLY hope the guy calls back tomorrow afternoon. that would make me happy.
philosophocles:
mmm. soup.
i somehow just spent 8 and a half hours recording and writing some music on my computer. I've never had the brain to actually get any constructive work done before and it was so damn exciting and fun and rewarding. The crazy thing is that in those 8 and a half hours all i actually have as my finished product is a 2 minute outro. But i am proud.

i am glad you took your shoes off. i love that feeling.

Lessons from Preschool

If you hurt someone, you say your sorry - As soon as you know about the offense.
(and you don't bitch about doing so.)
Own up to the fact that someone was hurt by what you did, and even if it wasn't intentional, say you're sorry for hurting them. (don't justify it. just say sorry for hurting them -EVEN IF YOURE NOT...

schiavona:
Ooo, snow. Lucky ducky. It missed us, so all we got was rain.

So what were your dreams about. One of mine last night involved a leopard spotted big bat that blended in perfectly with our leopard spotted faux fur throw, then clamped down on my lips so all I could smell was its bad breath. That was the most normal of my dreams last night. whatever

Is there a market where you are for someone to do house-sitting? Put an ad in the Citizen Times, saying you're available for house-sitting and pet siiting for people on vacation. That could get you lots of alone time. Just a thought!
