Randy Pausch had his last day today.

For those who haven't yet seen his Last Lecture, it gets my highest recommendation.

rest in peace, Randy.

I reeeeeally liked The Dark Knight, but somehow, that trailer was the best part of my evening. There are so many Superhero movies floating around right now and finally this one is coming along to deconstruct them.

In much the same way that John Osterman was deconstructed in that first scene.

i hear they call skagway ak 'skagwanda', it must be a reference to the ongoing alaskan genocide

My car decided it was time for 420.
Error code PO420 - Catalytic converter burning out, to be specific.

The catalytic converter?
Yeah. It's made out of platinum.
Ouch.

Well, in the un-edited photos, my hair was a bit more turquoisey and it was just 'shopped whiter so it didn't look so trashy. But the way I used to get really white hair was to bleach it (usually twice) then use purple-coloured shampoo every second wash to keep the yellow out and make it white. But if I used it every day my hair would get faintly purpley grey.

I wouldn't bleach my hair twice in a row, though. If I was starting from my natural colour, I'd go pink for a bit then bleach it out when I was done, so the two bleachings were nonconsecutive but got my hair as light as it needed to be.

no problem!smile

This weekend:

  • Camped for a night in Angeles Forest. Didn't get much sleep. The camp turned into a rave at sundown.
  • Had my heart briefly stolen by a lovely german medical researcher/rock climber/hula hooper lass. But she didn't want it and gave it back no worse for the wear.
  • Picked up my first burn in a while doing firespinning. It's just a first degree, but...

California's worst written traffic rule:

If you see animals or livestock, slow down and obey the person in charge of the animals.

Now if you'll pardon me, I need to commandeer an alpaca, paint it day-glo, and start enslaving an army of slow-moving motorists.

Got to see my sister's new movie for the first time, at the LA Film festival. As usual, I'm proud of her. It's a documentary called "The Order of Myths", about Mobile Mardi Gras.

In unrelated news, this amused me:

I'm a huge fan of the 70's TV series, The Prisoner. With its spy-story allusions and its elaborate mind games between the characters, its episodes were packed with stuff you can dig your teeth into, and plenty of countercultural and individualist messages to enjoy. My favorite episode would have to be "The Schitzoid Man". In this episode, Number Two is, as always, trying to extract...

Isn't a bit early for cyberpunk to make the jump from fiction to reality?

While Gates insisted that <mishandling nuclear weapons> was the immediate reason for the firings <of two top level Air Force officials>, he has sharply criticized the Air Force for failing to reorient itself to the types of conflict in which the United States is currently engaged. Where the Air Force leadership...

Ultimate Nerd Museum At Risk of Closing

The Museum at Bletchley Park is running out of money, and has been turned away by both the British government and the Gates foundation. Why do you care? Bletchley Park was where the Brits broke the German codes during World War II, resulting in several important battles won rather than lost. More importantly, it's where Alan Turing built...
