I love that short, obscure words tell us how the priorities of our civilization have changed. What once was so important that it merited a short word no longer matters enough to remember.

Some of my favorites:

kerf: a cut. Used to discuss how much material is lost as it is cut away with a saw or a welding torch.
I love this word because...

Dude, I don't know if I buy that besoms were ever in vogue as far as conversation pieces are concerned.

I just realized that the girl in my blog may be mistaken for me. It's not! I wouldn't be caught dead in those boots!

Finding the new apartment starts today. The future roomie and I will be checking in on a handful of places this eve.

gangstaswan:
Ooooh how exciting!

I'm not really that bothered by the fact that a guy was shot 50 feet from my door this week. I AM concerned that my landlord thinks that it's any business of his whether or not I'm having sex with my future roommate, or that I keep a pair of guinea pigs.

Time to find a new place.

Of course that's what some libertarians claim to believe. However, that's like saying "ALL DEMOCRATS ARE X". It's not the libertarian philosophy that pisses me off (completely), it's the individuals who claim to espouse this ideal who try to convert me or say "Do you believe this? Then you're a libertarian!"

It was really frustrating trying to make money off of someone who's more interested in proselytising.

Back in LA.

Can't quite get home yet. There's police tape a block to either side of my front door. According to the neighbors it was "just a shooting" but can't have been a bad one because there haven't been any ambulences.

Welcome home?

Awww, thank you for the carpool offer. Apparently Emily lives a few blocks away from me. At any rate, I won't be needing a ride tomorrow. I have an appointment with an orthopedic specialist who's going to set my ankle properly and put a walking cast on, but I'll be pretty doped up after that.
acidgrampa:
Probably not. In your neighborhood, it's mainly gang-on-gang shootings.
So unless you are a member of such an organization and I haven't heard about it, you're probably OK.
Except for stray bullets. wink

Out of Black Rock.
Stopped in Reno.
There's got to be a hotel room shower available somewhere in this town.
gangstaswan:
You poor thing. If I had friends up there still I'd send you their way.

Hi from Black Rock City.

Huh. Didn't figure this would actually work.

A climbing gym sounds really good, but G and I caved and just joined a nice locally owned small gym! It is actually pretty okay. I mean, riding a stationary bike will never be that much fun, but...yeah, I went the other day and I felt really goodsmile

it was my estimation that the gentleman had placed a hot dog in his anus to entice the prowling raccoon to come n' get it with his rabid little maw. i hope he didn't eat it and his digestive tract didn't see any difference between it and feces and just waved it on through

It's turning into one of those days.

Started the day off trying to debug why I couldn't talk to a new switch to configure it. I'd already ruled out a lot of things the day before and wanted to check another computer on a different switch of the same model to rule things out. So I went around the office to...

My sister's new documentary, "The Order of Myths", will be at the Nuart cinema in town today and tomorrow, and she'll be doing Q&A at tonight's 7:30 and 10:00 shows, and Saturday's 5pm & 7:30 shows.

I thought it was a good movie. Critics seem to agree:

That makes me damn happy that someone would think that! Do you do something similar or just interested?
annalee:
Fascinating, I went to some A.I. lectures with my brother before, it must be amazing to be involved in. Do you programme within that subject area? My little brother spends every second of the day programming, he's currently obsessed with prolog and lambda calculus and making interpreters and other things I cant remember and unfortunately understand very little of!

Sister's movie has come to the attention of the mainstream news.

The New York Times has their say.
as does Salon.com
CNN.com seems a little off the mark.
