I'll give favorite authors in the mystery genre. In no particular order: John Sandford - his Prey novels are violent, his Virgil Flowers novels are less so. James Lee Burke - writes prose like Hemingway.  Ian Rankin - solid Scottish author. Jo Nesbo - his Harry Hole is so flawed, he's awesome. Lawrence Sanders - his McNally novels are hilarious.
