Had that same situation in my backyard a couple of weeks ago. Found the little bird before the dogs nearly mauled it to death. I knew the mother wont take him back so I had no choice but to bring him inside and patched him up. Since I didn't have a cage myself I gave him to my aunt who has a white dove, and a little duckling at her house. So far the little bird is holding up.
