I was interested in the anniversary today because we have some family history connected to this bleak event. When the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki 70 years ago, my grandfather was in a Japanese prisoner of war camp about 10km away. He was a captain in the merchant navy and their ship had been sunk by German U-boats. The Germans handed him and his...

My mother-in-law was a girl in WW2 Japan. She told of always being hungry until the war was over. Your grandfather was lucky to be well treated by the Japanese. I guess since he wasn't in the military he was treated better. POWs were treated very bad by their Japanese captors. Gregory Boyington and many others spoke of the harsh beatings and starvation diets. Hopefully one day we can learn to get along.

I spent the last 10 days in Greece and arrived home yesterday. I was in Athens and on a beautiful little island called Agistri which was an hour from the city by boat. It was my second time in Greece. When I went last year I started to learn a few words and this time I had a little vocabulary, maybe 100 words or more?...

A couple of years ago myself and my partner travelled part of Italy - the mountains to the north of Tuscanny.  We slept over at a small hotel in the mountains.  We had no Italian and the owners no English.  However we had a reasonable conversation over breakfast as to where we were going and the fact that some of the roads we were planning on travelling were washed away the beginning of the season :)

Greek has to be a fantastic language.  Its was the language of the culture the West is built on.

Soft, transparent drapery carved from marble and stone...

I was overwhelmed when I was confronted by these suspended fragmentary sculptures in the archaeology museum in Athens last year and remembered to post these pictures today because I'm going back there soon. I haven't travelled since Spring last year and I feel so something-or-other (I can't think what word.. glad, grateful?) to be going on an

Thanks to your posts on the debt crisis I read the Current Affairs group. I really hate austerity measures.

The human race is capable of creating such beauty--art, poetry, music--that is can cause the soul to weep unabashed tears! When I lived in Turkey in the early '80's, and in Germany in the early '90's, I spend long hours over many many day exploring long abandoned sites, the usual tourists attractions,  and museums marveling at man's creations.  Now my traveling days are waning and I envy you...but am gladdened that we can will get the chance to experience these wonders through your eyes, words, and lens! Happy travels @annalee

This was a walk I went on the other day, I felt like I was in heaven. I was in fact. I've walked around this hill hundreds of times but still feel like I found new routes and paths. It's not all that big but once you get there it seems to grow and grow. I came to a little peak and climbed it and

Thank you so much for your sweet words about my cat disappearing. She came back this morning smelling very strange so I imagine she had been stuck somewhere small and damp for those 3 days! If only we knew what those little creatures got up to.. So glad she's home. Hope you are all well :-) xx

I rather like the fact that the site automatically inserts the day as the title when one does not provide a title. And, as @ferkixlll says, there's a lovely dhyana to blankness.

I totally get how seven people could be so enraptured by the glamour you cast to hit the "like" button even if you posted a picture of something unsavory, or even a post of no content (I had to check to make sure I hadn't been one of them, but I am regaining my composure after a long period of shamefully uncontrollable Annalee worship, so it turns out I managed to not "like" nothing)
