i've noticed lately that my kitty, who is always very vocal, sometimes sits in the window and looks outside and makes this weird sound. its sorta like meow mumbling.

Not to be gross about it, but I'd bet the cat is looking at a bird. I've had a number of cats over the years make such weird noises... some will also chatter their teeth and a vet told me it's a jaw move they make when killing prey.
But we still gotta love our purring predators! LOL
