cutting glass

I want to cut glass bottles in half to make them into candle holders. Other than the basics (using a dremel with a diamond blade etc) what are some tips and tricks? I keep shattering my bottles, or cracking them.

Method 1: Dip a piece of common string in alcohol or kerosene and squeeze dry or as dry as it will get without dripping. This string should then be placed on the already marked glass and tied tight. Light the string and let it burn off. Immediately, while the glass is still hot, plunge it into cold water. Be sure the container of water is large enough to let the glass go completely under as well as your arm up to the elbow, so as to deaden the vibration when you strike the glass. Strike the glass with your other hand outside the line of cutting using a stick of wood and hitting a sharp stroke. This quick, sharp stroke will break the glass where it has been weakened by the burning string into a clean cut as if done by a regular glass cutter. This method may be used to cut bottles in any shape and to make vases and to perform many such cuttings on glass.

Method 2: Here is a method that rarely fails to break the glass clean in the place you want it broke. First, scratch the glass with the corner of a file or sharp graver. Have a piece of wire bent to the desired shape you want to cut the glass. Heat the wire red hot and lay it upon the scratch. Sink the glass into cold water just deep enough to come on a level with the wire, not quite covering it. The glass will break clean.

So just wondering, what do you usually drink your wine out of?

Do you have a special glass for each varietal? Do you have a plastic cup?

Do you go the Riedel/Spiegelau route? Or the Cut Lead crystal your mom kept in the china cabinet?

I myself am rather partial …

I, seriously, use a lot of styrofoam cups. about ten cents a pop and they're disposible.

I also use a lot of old glass candle holders - you know, the ones that look like a weird glass when the wax is gone? They're interesting and fun. Make people look twice, too!

When I manage to remember to do dishes I'll use some cheap wine glasses I bought on base for, I dunno, seven, eight bucks.

I usually use Riedel, something a bit small with a short stem from the Gourmet series, I think. I've been getting a bit paranoid about them and was looking for a cheap alternative. I stopped by IKEA, of all places, over the weekend. Their glasses are usually crap, but I noticed they have a very long-stemmed, extremely large white wine glass that I think they just started selling. It's seriously in the Riedel Sommeliers range. I can't wait to try it out.

i think you are refering to Borosilicate glass. that is the scientific name for the glass that most people refer to as Pyrex, which is known for it's resistance to cracking or shattering due to thermal shock. that's the type of glass i work with too. wink

If you're a SG and you're ever wondering "glasses or no glasses?" the answer is always glasses. ALWAYS. GLASSES. [pounding fists on the table] GLASS-ES! GLASS-ES! GLASS-ES!

I'm seriously nervous about glasses.

Here's a secret. Im vain. No, really.

I need glasses.

Soon.

For about 6 months now, I've been saying "I need glasses". I first needed glasses back in high school and got them just so I could pass my driving test.

I can read just fine its just that distance viewing that gets to me. Or small print. Or the...

For this experiment you will need: a glass (this is a legitimate glass made of glass or maybe crystal if you are way fancy, not a generic term for any drinking vessel), three to five ice cubes, a bottle of whisky or whiskey if you prefer. Place ice cubes into glass, pour whisky or whiskey atop said cubes and take it all in. The distant...

Girls with glasses. Theres something about that. It adds another layer to the look. Hair, make-up, clothes, jewelry.... glasses. It adds a bit of mystery to the face, too. You can hide behind them, take them off and chew em a little for effect, fling them off in a moment of panic (or passion!). They become something to fumble with when nervous. And when a...
