Craft is not art, but is that to say craft is a lesser creative form? I don't think so. Craft has obtained a stigma, and thats why people take offence, it is not what people say it is how it is said.
Words only carry the meaning we allow. If artisans, tradespeople, and craftspeople allow our work to be treated as lesser goods it's our own fault. If we want respect in the Art World we need to earn it. Personally I couldn't care less what other people want to call me or my work, but I can easily see why it's a big deal to a lot of people.
People who make craft are not artisans automatically; many artists make both non-funtional and funtional work. Is that person an artisan one monment and an artist the next? This is not to say that there is no need for distintion, beacuse they do fill diffrent roles overall, but then again they also overlap a great deal.
For sure, dividing craft from art is a thick, fuzzy grey line full of wiggle room, but the line is there and artisans pretending it isn't doesn't help anything.
