Hello my name is Alex. Posted this over in the cosplayers group but figured might get a few interested people here as well since anime is one of the large cosplay fandoms. I used to write a SuicideGirl Gamer of the Week column. I am starting up a new website …

Hey everyone!

I'm writing a research paper on comic conventions and I am including cosplay as one of my focuses.
I have a list of questions so if any one has the time, I would really appreciate if you could just respond in this thread. Any help is greatly appreciated! …

1. Why do you cosplay?

I really enjoy the process of building / creating the costumes. It's a mixture of so many art forms rolled into one for me.

2. What/who do you cosplay as?

Star Wars characters mostly: Boba Fett, Stormtrooper, 8-9 different clone troopers, tusken raider and more.

3. Where and for what events do you cosplay?

Anywhere and everywhere I can, but I enjoy conventions the most.

4. How do you acquire your costumes? Do you make them?

I make everything myself, including vacuum forming plastics, sculpting, molding and casting.

5. Do your friends cosplay? Do you coordinate costumes with other people?

The vast majority of my social circle consists of adults who never stopped playing dress up. I'm part of several organized costuming groups, so there's plenty of coordination.

6. Have you made friends from cosplaying? Do you use it to network?

Many friends, and hugely useful for networking.

7. How much do you spend on cosplaying?

A lot.

My Boba Fett costume comes in at around $6000. Each of my others is over $1000.

8. How do -cosplayers respond to you when you're in costume? (negative and/or positive)

I've only had 1-2 bad experiences in the 10 years I've been doing this. Otherwise people are awesome.

9. What is your most memorable experience while cosplaying?

Being on the Today Show as part of an armored escort for Donald Trump.

10. Does cosplaying take a lot of energy out of you?

Yes. My costumes are almost all full body armor, so I can't sit or move well.

My Fett costume is mostly metal armor, and weighs in at about 75 pounds total, 12 of it being the gun.

11. When attending conventions, do you cosplay every day? If not, what do you do on your days off?

Generally yes. If there is a panel I really want to attend I'll change out, and I reserve some plain-clothes time for shopping.

Don't know if you still needed it, but it seemed like a fun questionnaire anyway...

1. Why do you cosplay?

I was in drama club in high school, also did conventions. Seemed like a natural changeover.

2. What/who do you cosplay as?

Shaun (Shaun of the Dead). Arthur Dent (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Cole (inFamous 2) Hunter (Left 4 Dead), Steampunk

3. Where and for what events do you cosplay?

SDCC, Phoenix Comicon, Leprecon

4. How do you acquire your costumes? Do you make them?

Thriftstores are my friend.

5. Do your friends cosplay? Do you coordinate costumes with other people?

The Wife cosplays a lot. Only one other time when we got people to go with us did they cosplay, they haven't been back to a con since. Pretty cool costumes tho.

6. Have you made friends from cosplaying? Do you use it to network?

Have crossed paths with people, but haven't really made friends. You recognize others when they are known for being that character in some of the local events.

7. How much do you spend on cosplaying?

I try to spend as little as possible while making it while having it look good. Clearance goods and a bit of spray paint can go a long way. Most expensive thing thus far was a PITH helmet for my Steampunk outfit.

8. How do -cosplayers respond to you when you're in costume? (negative and/or positive)

No negatives thus far.

9. What is your most memorable experience while cosplaying?

Most memorable was first time cosplaying at SDCC. Shaun from SOTD. Nervous as hell, second time there and didn't really know what I was doing. Had some people say "You've got red on you" but you get used to that. But I'm walking around in between panels and these two boys run up to me and want their picture with me. I oblige and their dad takes it. I start walking away and I hear one go "Shaun! Shaun!" I turn around and see one of them doing a very half assed zombie walk. Arms out and sort of shuffling and he says "I'm Ed!" Don't know why, but that just seemed awesome.

10. Does cosplaying take a lot of energy out of you?

Most of the costumes I do are really light weight so I feel pretty good at the end of the day. The getting ready and preparing the equipment and fabrics, and accessories, and such are the most draining parts. But when it all comes together, that makes all the blood, sweat, tears, and copious amount of cursing worth it.

11. When attending conventions, do you cosplay every day? If not, what do you do on your days off?

Usually two days of cosplay, and the rest in normal nerdy wear.

Sometimes, it's hard to decide what cosplay you should do next. I call it "cosplayers block". So I thought this thread could be dedicated to asking for/giving cosplay suggestions!! Just post a recent selfie or two, list the types of cosplaying you do (ex: video games, anime, TV shows, movies; …

I would love to have cosplay suggestions as well, if anyone knows girl characters with short hair?
