my parents basement flooded last night with the crazy rainstorm we had. 6" of water, thank you failed sump pump! my sisters drum set is fucked. my stepfather lost a lot of negatives and prints (he's a photographer for one of the big 3 ny newspapers), and lots and lots of laundry in the laundry room had to be thrown out. (most of which was dirty for so long, it either didn't fit or was long out of style, or was crusted in mouse turds.) however, after 20 years of 5 people accumulating crap, there is finally an opportunity to clear some shit out.

i went over there this afternoon to rescue my high school/college art portfolio- sadly, a lot of my work is ruined or damaged. it's mostly self portraits i did when i was 17-19 with a few collages and scratchboards thrown in. (damn, i was really good. it was a little shocking to see it all again.) but "luckily" my basics of drafting classwork was fine, not a drop of water on any of it! heh. fucking drafting.

since i am a sentimental fuck, i stuffed the whole pile into the backseat of my car. in 2 or 3 days hopefully it will have dried out and i can gently peel everything apart, see what's salvageable, and get some pics posted for ya.

i also hit the motherlode of cool stuff, as i usually do when i visit my parents and go digging. got myself a blender (my mother apparently has 4 or 5!), some cast iron skillets, a vintage aluminum baking tray, a ceramic saucepan, a nice wooden picture frame, and these fine objects...

yep, it's damaged, but i think it adds to the drama. very jane eyre.

i loooove typeset drawers, and was actually thinking of getting a second one. i already have this one...

but it is overflowing. and sadly, buried behind a pile of shit. (i've been trying to keep busy, see?) it's too heavy to hang on the wall. frown

and finally, the find of the day...

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

a singer 221-1 portable machine, circa 1935! along with the carrying case and manual and accessories, it was all undamaged! and it's in great shape and it seems like it will run with a little TLC and grease. i am soooo stoked. we use the industrial singers from this era at work, and those motherfuckers run FOREVER. they don't make sewing machines like that anymore. i googled it and i think it's worth between $400-600.

oh. oh! AND i talked to my mother about this Alexander Calder print i have hanging in the living room. i googled it a few years ago, and it was worth about $3500. apparently since then it's gone up to like $7000. so god forbid something horrible happens and i need that kind of money, i can come up with it. but i hope that never happens because i like the print and i like owning artwork that isn't my own or a reproduction poster. wink

so yeah. good times.
i photographed all my collages today, gonna post those somewhere soon so i can have all my artwork online. i also signed up for a craft swap website, so that'll keep me busy and happy.
and i'm feeling a little better. slowly. day by day, baby steps. i think i may be ready to come out of hiding too. maaaaybe shoot a set? lol

i quit the geezers group in a huff yesterday. (pms ftw!) now i kinda miss it. but i don't think i'll go back. wink maybe in a few years when i qualify. hahaha

k hope yr all well and happy and shit!

octological:
I used an old Singer like that (table-mounted) for a workstudy job repairing the college's decaying theatre blacks. Dusty velour + basement room + frighteningly fast sewing machine = sweatshop atmosphere. But I liked it anyway. Very existential.

You're an enigma, you know? I loved the little glimpse inside you gave -- angsty as it was, it was real.

And you know, I like the idea of the real you. I like your poersona, sure -- but I like YOU, too, you know?

Someday we're gonna meet and have a long long long talk over beers. And if we don't both end up laughing and crying there's something very wrong. smile

And no, I'm not hitting on you, silly!

kiss
