All right my friends, I need a favor from you guys. I'm doing a survey about ethics in my psych class. Just leave your responses as comments. Thanks smile

1) A house in Iraq is taken out by an air strike conducted by the US Military. The house was a suspected hide out for Al Qaeda leaders who were plotting to kill American soldiers in Iraq and to kill innocent Americans on US soil. The strike kills the Al Qaeda leaders and derails their plans to attack US soldiers and civilians. But a consequence of the air strike was that an innocent family who had no say in the harboring terrorists in their home was killed. Is the air strike an ethical choice? Why or why not?

2) The Iranian government is in fact supplying insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan with weapons and knowledge to fight and kill American service members in those countries. The US government accuses the Iranian government of supporting terrorists while the Iranian government is saying that they are protecting their sovereignty. Is the Iranian government justified in arming those insurgents? Why or why not?

3) An Athenian general in ancient Greek times has decided to press the women and children into slavery and to put to death the entire adult male population of another Greek city that sided with the Persians during a recent war. The Athenian general justified his decision by claiming that making an example of that city will make other Greek cities less likely to side with the Persians in the future thus securing the future security of Athens. Is the Athenian general justified in his decision? Why or why not?
catdad:
1) Ultimately, no. The entire issue of us being there is unethical. Our troops never should have been there in the first place to execute that strike. That being said, since we are there now and with the situation as it is, I think it is justifiable and don't have a lot of qualms about the result. Not having lived in a state where armed "mercenaries/terrorists/freedom fighters" can force their way into your home and use it as a hideout, it's difficult to relate. Without knowing more details as to why the family didn't leave when it happened (was a family member being held hostage?), it's hard to feel sorry for them.

2) As a sovereign state, I think Iran is justified to do whatever they want. We shouldn't have invaded Iraq in the first place, at least not without significant global support and a better plan. The entire region is fucked. Iran is arming them now, but they could very well be fighting against many of those same people within the next decade or two as powers and allegiances shift.

3) Of course not. Slavery of any kind = bad. Killing entire populations of people = bad.
