alright. now I'm cranky.
I think I'm stroking out or something. (not really)
I feel like I'm speaking a different language than everyone else. it makes sense to me, so why doesn't it make sense to anyone else?
if I want to discuss a disagreement, it doesn't mean I think you are wrong and I want to show you why. if I know you are wrong, I will not bring it up because it is not worth my time. plus I'm not the type of asshole who likes to rub people's faces in their own shit. I believe what I believe because it makes sense to me. I say and do what I say and do because those things make the most sense, to me, to say and do.
I can't imagine any person going around thinking, saying, and doing things s/he felt were not right. I understand that we do things that are morally questionable, but we usually have a justification for it. we usually are able to tell ourselves, "I need to do this," or otherwise provide ourselves with the mental foundation to think, speak, and act.
anyway.
if we are discussing our conflicting opinions on any matter, I want you to sell your reasoning to me. tell me why I should believe you. when I provide counter arguments, show me their weaknesses. just because I am assertive does not mean I'm not humble. if we are discussing something and I am knocking it around, taking it apart and putting it back together, you should take it as a compliment because I *want* to understand.
sometimes I'm wrong. anyone who has shown me to be wrong knows how that goes. it's usually along the lines of, "oh. ha ha yeah I'm silly." it might not be so laid back. I might say, "dammit I wanted to be right about that."
OF COURSE I am human and sometimes take extra time to process. sometimes I need to think about things. sometimes I need to play with the logic a little bit more to make it work in a way that I understand.
THE BEST WAY to piss me off, the best way to invalidate any argument you've brought to the table by costing yourself all credibility, is to change the subject to something only you think matters.
telling me that you are right -- or the authority. whatever -- because you are ends the conversation. it shows that you either 1. have no reasonable basis for your thinking or 2. don't care *what* is right as long as *you* are right. neither of those make for good debate, which really is the whole point of having a dialogue. really, anything else is prompted monologue.
not that it's not valuable. it's just a different type of interaction.
