So, after holding off for a few days, I just couldn't help commenting on Hunter Thompson's demise. After reading a good obit today from the LA Times, I realized that-shit!-my thinking on how to construct the narrative of my documentary has been far, far too anal. I'd gotten seduced by high falutin' theories of exploding objectivity back in college, but just hadn't made the explicit connection to how HSTs style did exactly that. I mean, I knew he did, but the two just never met in the corridors of my head. Too much irrigation, I guess.

Anyway, hope I can learn to be half the unrepentant artist he was, even if I'm never nearly as good with a shot or a Vincent Black Shadow.

Why he killed himself? It all seems to point to this bad leg he had that'd really cramped his style, or at least that's what everyone says. But shit, a man who could live and write like him offing himself over a slowly-healing leg? Un-befucking-lieveable it seems. That said, he did the unbelievable as a matter of routine, so who can really tell?

On a slightly different note, I had my last possible date this month suddenly cancelled. I think we can reschedule, and I'd just as rather. February has fucking sucked. Would be good to get a good start next month.

At least I've gotten my research going today. In addition to figuring out whether foreigners make up 1.5 or 1.7 percent of the Japanese population (answer: I think 1.5,) I've been looking at funding sources. All the scholarships are for students, so not sure what a freelance lecturer can pull for work not even remotely related to his field. Give it a go, though.

Now, time to find a camera...
