Open Letter to SG

15 years ago, when Suicide Girls first came online, I remember what a huge thrill it was. Erotic imagery of what would become known as alt beauty was still in its nascent form and you were more likely to find conventional erotica or pornography instead of anything involving piercings or tattoos. A decade and a half later and the acceptance of alt models has skyrocketed, and SG has been at the forefront of that trend, blazing the trail. For that, millions of fans thank you. But for me, Suicide Girls is more than just an opportunity to enjoy the grace of the feminine form wrapped in the interesting lines of additional ink and ornamented with pleasing piercings.

The “About” section of SG is slim on words. It sums itself up as, “What some people think makes us strange, or weird, or fucked up, we think is what makes us beautiful.” That single sentence captures more than some people give it credit for. It’s more than just the amazing physical beauty of the models that Suicide Girls has brought to the lives of its models, its hopefuls, and its members.

SG has been leading the trend of acceptance.

The women of Suicide Girls show the beauty of their nerdy side, their gamer side, their foodie side. They flaunt their membership in the LGBT community. They proudly display themselves performing activities that have long been outside of the mainstream. And they do it with a literal smile or seductive look that makes the viewer feel welcomed.

Beyond the spectacular photography, though, the women of SG interact. They’ve formed a community amongst themselves and their readers. They are not some unapproachable icons that the hoi polloi will never be able to speak to. No, they engage in the forums. They engage in Twitter. They write blogs that people follow and comment on.

So for your absolutely stunning beauty, thank you. Thank you for sharing more than just your tits and asses with the masses; thank you for sharing yourself.
