My sister is an idiot and I'm trying to remember if I was that way when I was her age.
She thinks that because she just turned 18 she no longer has to check in with our mom or tell her where she's going. And I'm not talking little things like out with friend, but you know, 3 hour road trips to Berkeley. Things like that.
For a while she was having her boyfriend sleep over about 4 nights a week against our mom's wishes, and then when she expressly asked her not to, she started ditching out and sleeping at her boyfriend's place. Or rather, her 22 year old boyfriend's parent's house. In the garage.
Neither of them have jobs or any independent source of income. They both rely on their parents for food, clothing and shelter. And yet my sister now seems to think that she can do whatever she wants because she is of legal age.
And the kicker is, I have no idea where she has gotten this notion. The rest of my siblings and I never pulled this kind of shit. We didn't decide that once we were 18 we could do whatever the fuck we wanted, and our mom never told us that either. When you move out you can do pretty much whatever.. But frankly, my mom is awesome. She's really laid back about most things. She supports and often funds our shenanigans. She's non-judgemental. She basically has one steadfast rule.
-Do whatever you want during the day and long into the night, but be at home and in your bed. alone. by morning.
Thats it, really. She doesn't care if we're having sex as long as we do it responsibly. She absolutely hated my tattoos when I first got them, but I think they're growing on her and I know she's making a conscious effort to at least be supportive of me. She encourages us to go to school and get an education or get a job, but she has never laid down a law about getting some sort of responsibility or moving out of her house. She lets us have parties as long as we clean up after ourselves. She takes us shopping sometimes just for the hell of it, and buys us whatever we need. Its a pretty sweet deal that my sister is pissing all over.
Today she has taken some sort of a stand about xmas and how she doesn't want to go in the same car as me and my mom and our other sister. She already cleared bringing her boyfriend, nobody would have cared anyway. But now she's having a tearful tantrum about how she "thought this was my decision now". And it's like... no. You live at home. You're just barely 18. You don't have a license, but your mother has a car all lined up for you when you get around to it. You don't have a job. You're not going to school. You're constantly stoned, and the only thing you spend the money your mom gives you on is Taco Bell and more pot.
What the fuck makes you think you're responsible enough to make your own decisions???
You're 18. Big fucking whoop. That means that you can move out if you want without going through the hassle of being an emancipated minor. That means your boyfriend is no longer a statutory rapist. It doesn't mean you can do whatever the fuck you want and shit all over the people you depend on to take care of you.
Idiot.
