I am a cartoon character. I know this to be true because my life is a cartoon. I am Willie Coyote on a rocket, ducking a low branch, feeling pleased he'd missed the branch, and then smacking straight into the canyon wall. Or Yosemite Sam catching Bugs and his guns backfiring; Tom evades the bulldog but steps on the rake. These cartoons are not comedy, they are existential critique. I just about managed to swim to the surface of my reading list, finishing the essay on Nietzsche, but rather than a triumphant explosion out of the water, I proved to be just in time for a tsunami of more work. I now have dissertation proposals, research thesis and philosophy of science paper to write. FUCKING HELL!!!

Not just that but I turn up to see my new supervisor, have a chat about some scientific epistemology - my plan was to do Kuhn, something I'd done before and therefore could slide some of the reading - only to come out having to read the whole of Vico's New Science (the sort of tome that's sizable enough to make its very own dent in the rainforest), Francis Bacon's seminal New Organon (merely the introduction of induction to science, so no small matter), and...goddamned some other book that I've blocked out of my memory. And all this by Monday.

All this just to become a professional beard-stroking wise-ass. There must be easier ways to earn a living.

However, bitching aside, there is the good news. I have been accepted for my PhD AND I've managed to convince the department to let me do it on the aesthetics of extreme music. How good is that? For my PhD I get to talk about Sunn 0))) and Merzbow. Now, my good folks, seeing as how you guys have listened to a record or two, I'd be most interested in any listening suggestions. Here's my proposal and some bands I'm considering looking at, which should hopefully give you an idea of where I'm coming from. So if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please let me know...

Phenomenology, Adorno's Negative Dialectics and Formalist Musical Aesthetics.

In this study I will be addressing the problem of how aesthetic philosophy attempts to ascribe meaning and value to a musical encounter both in terms of the subjective experience and the music experienced. Strictly analytic, formalist accounts eschew extra-musical content, either as an intrinsic property of music or as a substantive aspect of musical experience. Meaningful analysis is thereby restricted to the problematics of the formal aspects of the music. My thesis will examine to what extent this position is both philosophically tenable and an adequate methodological approach to the complexity of musical encounter.

Although there has been much debate concerning the epistemological status and value of supposedly extra-musical qualities such as metaphor, musical narratives and emotional content in music, much of this analysis has engaged with formalism within the bounds of analytic aesthetics. Phenomenology and Adorno's negative dialectics offer alternative methodologies that not only serve to problematize the formalist approach but also disclose contrasting territories of philosophical enquiry.

I will develop my analysis within the context of the contemporary avant-garde [read bastard heavy music or - the shit we listen to!] which not only challenges the formal structures of music, but also the values and emotional parameters of musical experience. The experiential qualities of volume, repetition, spatial awareness, physical and emotional discomfort, as expressed in such music, appear to confound the critical possibilities of formalist methodology. By contrast Phenomenological method is ideally suited to such an aesthetic exploration. In addition, Adorno's dialectics would appear a paradigmatic method for examining the socio-economic antagonisms imprinted within the structural problematics of contemporary music. Furthermore, both of the aforementioned methods seem better suited to exploring the complex relationship between noise, sound and 'music', and thereby re-situating the very practice of musical aesthetics.

Not only would this thesis provide a stimulating addition to contemporary aesthetic theory, I would attempt to position the analysis within broader philosophical concerns. The deployment of alternative methodologies, in problematizing both the traditional context of formalist aesthetic analysis and introducing novel problematics, may shed new light on the relationship between aesthetics and other spheres of valuation such as ethics. In departing from a strict formalist account, one may be better positioned to relate questions of normativity, and metaethics to arena of aesthetic evaluation. In so doing this thesis would be helpful in the growing debate concerning the relationship of ethics and aesthetics.

This sort of thing:

Cecil Taylor, Converge, Capt. Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Fantomas, John Zorn/Naked City, Einsturzende Neubauten, Maldoror, Stockhausen, Swans, Merzbow, Boris, Sunn O))), Final, Venetian Snares, Autechre, Berio, Webern, Bertwistle, Godspeed, Khlyst, Xenekis, Satie, Glass, John Cage, Haino, Bobo Stenson, Heiner Goebbels, Galas, Tappa Zukkie.

Those are some examples but there's shit loads more to add to it. I'm trying to get a good spread and I also want to show some good lineages. But you get the picture. So please, any suggestions...

So all that's good news.

Erm...

I watched this recently...

Not so much based on, as a reenactment of the notorious Armin Miewes case. And boy do you get your money's worth. puke For those of you who don't recognise the name: it's the guy who advertised on the internet for someone to eat, which he found, and then ate him, consensually. Needless to say that the film really is for people with the strongest stomachs (and I'm sure most of you have that!) as it features pretty full on gay sex and also the most graphic gore I've ever seen. Makes Salo look like a walk in the park. But it's also a really great film if you can stomach it. The direction's good, the cinematography's great and the effects are so good that it could basically be a snuff movie. In fact, I checked out a few grindhouse and gorehound sites and some of them were saying it was too much! biggrin

But it's gets inside your head and makes you ask yourself some awkward questions about one of the most unpleasant and bizarre cases in sadomasochistic history.

And I watched this last night:

biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin This film fell out of the cute tree and hit every branch on the way down. All these animated movies became way too cynical for my tastes. They realised there was a bunch of money to be made and they'd want to make the movie before they even had an idea for it. This however, is fresh, very funny, beautiful to look at and, apart from the confounding ending, a great piece of film-making that I'd heartedly recommend. A great tonic to reality, particularly if you'd just watched Cannibal.

And, here's some music to boot...

I thought I'd do something different and as there was a bit of talk of dub and reggae I thought I'd put some of that up. I used to live with this guy who ran a reggae sound system so I've got bucketloads of the stuff. Here's a real mix of roots, conscious, dub, dancehall and similar. Hope you like it. Roll up a big one... biggrin

Lee Scratch Perry - The Secret Laboratory (Scientific Dancehall)
Barrington Levi vs. Beenie Man - Two Sounds (Dancehall Mix)

I love the way dub tunes always put 'dub' in the title- making sure you know what you're getting. I think doom metal should do the same: Commuted (Doom Mix), Etna Doom, Migration Doom etc. biggrin biggrin

man, i'm sorry, but all the stuff you put up has expired! my fault, i know. best thing to do rather than have the chore of putting it all back up would be to whack it all on a cd as MP3s for me. i'm still well up for doing some trading if you are? let me know on that front.

i have some Black Uruhu on vinyl which hasn't seen the light of day for a long time, and some great Eek a Mouse stuff on a Sun Splash video! i haven't seen that in years either!

you may have heard of a band called Blind Idiot God? i sent a couple of songs to Solipsis a while back and i think he liked 'em. anyway, it's instrumental and is either heavy and complex, or chilled and dub! Bad Brains?! check 'em out, i'm almost certain you'll be into it.

Blind Idiot God:
Stravinsky/Blasting Off
Wide Open Spaces
Wise Man Dub
Raining Dub (you've gotta love that title, haha!!)
