Employment History 101

I gave up a damn lucrative job at Verizon Wireless because of their shitty business practices, and because I'd been offered the opportunity to become a body piercer, by a good friend of mine that I'd always admired. I'd grown weary of Verizons ethnically and morally bankrupt procedures and the call-center environment in general, so I decided to take the friend up on the offer and learn a new trade.

Piercing was interesting for a while, but I left because it wasn't lucrative enough. That and I couldn't deal with the lack of benefits. In retrospect, it was also somewhat of a negative atmosphere, and that bugs me too. Hard to excel in a place that fosters such atmospheres, in my opinion.

Following piercing, I took a job back at a bookstore (as I'd previously done a three year stint with Borders Books) because that's always been a true passion of mine; writing. I was happier in this environment, as it was a far more personally satisfying job by far, but, as is normally the case with a job you really enjoy, it was even less lucrative than piercing.

So, I'd recently been doing the ole' job-search hustle; sending out resumes and job-hunting in the hopes of landing decent paying employment, similar to my Verizon pay scale. It had me down in the dumps for awhile, as I'm completely used to taking care of myself and always having money when needed. This was no longer the case. It actually became necessary to accept financial help from someone very near and dear to me. I literally lost some serious sleep over this. I fucking hate needing help. I felt like a failure. Still, I sucked it up, accepted the help, and am well on my way to repaying them for their infinite kindess. I just hope that I can be there for them when they need something, no matter how big or small that need may be.

And, FINALLY -- I hit pay dirt.

Yesterday, I was offered a job with Expanets, a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies.
I start Monday.
It's as a Help Desk rep, helping customers with telecommunications equipment over the phone. It offers comfortable hourly pay, full benefits and 401k that start the first day of employment, and a quarterly bonus based upon your performance (which averages a little over a grand a quarter, pretty sweet). Monday through Friday, weekends off.
Damn coolest thing that has happened all year for me, let me tell you

**NEWS FLASH** Fuck Expanets. mad I'll explain this when I'm in a better mood ...

And the second coolest thing that has happened so far this year?

I think I have my hands on an old 1970 Honda CB750. Yes, oh yes. And I plan to chop this little girl out.
Wha'?
Hunh?
No Harley?
Hell no, I'm staunchly anti-Harley.
I refuse to pay the ridiculous inflated prices that they ask for their vehicles.
Christ, every yuppie turd on the block around here rides one. These boat-shoe-and-cargo-short-wearin' idiots that live in $250,000 houses that become 'weekend warriors' by tying on that cute little Harley bandana and the matching Harley t-shirt and throwing their leg over their 'hog' for the little half-hour jaunt up to Kash n Karry for some decaf instant lattes' to have with their blueberry crepes.
Fuck 'em.
I want nothing to do with the latest fashion trend that happens to be riding a Harley. Truth be told, I was always a bit put off at Harley riders elitist attitudes, the 'you're not as cool as me because your ride isn't American made'-bullshit. This also may be due to the fact that I've always ridden Jap bikes (Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc.), who knows?
I actually prefer old Triumphs and would love to chop one but they're a bit outside my price range, as we speak. So, I'd been biding my time, trying to figure out how to get my hands on a bike for the last couple of years. Well, it recently dawned on me that they used to make choppers out of Hondas back in the 70's. If I remember correctly, this was partially because there was a real dislike for the inferior quality that Harley was putting out at the end of the decade (when they sold their name) and partially because the Hondas engine was one of the most reliable out there . Riding a raked, stretched, stripped ride where EVERYTHING unnecessary was removed (we're talking gas gauge, turn signals, even brake lights) was a real passion for many back in the day and I think I'll continue that passion, all the while giving the finger to Harley AND the masses, both at the same time.

Here's the ultimate site for Honda choppers: www.hondachopper.com/choppers.html
for those interested.

Okay, I'm spent. I'm going to go imbibe some brewed barley and hopps now.

Rock out,
Scotty
