We had a welcome BBQ for all the new students and to welcome the old ones back. It was pretty fun and I got to protect the Vegetarian table from the wicked meat eaters. Being a carnivore myself I did feel slightly hypocritical but if the vegetarian food wasn't protected it would have been stolen by people too lazy to stand in line.

I think we have a much gentler bunch of students this semester (which probably means I'm very very wrong) and we managed to close up the rec room a lot earlier than last semester. I'm a bit burnt out with my co-workers as it seems that most of them don't really care about the job and don't wanna do it. Generally this means 5 of us out of the 12 end up doing all the work. It's possible I'm wrong and they feel the exact same way about me but that doesn't change my feelings.

Tomorrow the semester starts but class only really begins on Tuesday afternoon for me so I might go and buy some comics (people who aren't nerds or geeks can safely stop reading here and skip to the next paragraph) I picked up the first volume of DMZ (pub. Vertigo) and it is really good. Sharp and angular art style with a really clever and engaging story. I think it's great they chose not to focus on the whole "Oh noes America is having another civil war!!" but rather see it as being a largely accepted fact and show the human side of living in such a situation every day of your life. I also loved the idea that the only embedded reporter in the DMZ becomes an almost mythical character to the every day people.

(It's safe the comic love is over) I might also go to the bookshop and buy my textbooks. I've largely been putting this off as they will set me back nearly 3/4rs of my pay cheque and generally we only use one or two of the five prescribed texts. Thankfully my IT unit will be entirely online and won't require a textbook. I might also try and save money by taking my laptop too more classes and type my notes up rather than waste page upon page of A4 sheet in folders that I'm guaranteed to throw away at the end of semester.

On a money related note it seems the Australian Government actually owes me rather a large sum in tax and I might be able to afford my trip to the UK for Xmas. I need to file my return first but I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed on the hope that I can afford it. Anyone from Brighton on SG? I'd be visiting my friends and family there and would love a chance to meet some SG people! How was everyone else's Sunday?
