Umm, so I finally got around to seeing The Piano Teacher last night...
Astonishingly relatable. What a beautifully constructed piece of film... Between the long, unflinching takes and the filmmakers fuck you to the shot reverse shot Hollywood editing structure and the gorgeous references to the starkness of the black and white piano keys, to the repetative shots of student hands on keys that frames to isolate... only voice cues you in that there is someone overseeing this lesson... or her bare knees for the case of Mr. Klemmer...
My God... films like this affirm me in an odd way. Don't get me wrong.... the end left me completely unsatiated and wanting more... But in a way that was succinct with the main character, I think.
I didn't know ice hockey players wore garter-esque contraptions? Or maybe I did and I blocked it out.
See this movie. Stat.
One last comment... one of my favorite devices in a film is when a soundbridge is used from music that is created in one space of the film and serves as a score or nondiegetic music (or if you really want to argue it, internal diegetic) in another space. For instance... it starts with a rehearsal of a Schuman piece, I think, and we see the trio playing. And then it bridges over into the next scene where the piano teacher is walking through a mall. There it serves as a score. Now is it in her head or for our benefit? I love that shit. Long time.
I'm done. This film get's my highest rating: "I just wish I had thought of it first." - Brian Slade
