I got a question for all you girls out there. Let me start with some backstory:
Last weekend, I was at the bar with my friends and got introduced to a very cute, very intelligent girl. The kind of girl that makes you wonder how the hell she ended up in this crappy town. Turns out she's a news anchor at the local CBS station. We talked and flirted for an hour or so, and got along pretty well. The body language and eye contact let us know that the other was interested. We ended up exchanging numbers, and before I left, she said she hoped we could do something the next weekend.
We chatted a couple of times over the next week. Nothing too serious, just talking about our week. On Saturday, the day we had been planning on hanging out, she had to work at the station, so I ended up going out with friends before she got off work. Her gay friend came to hang out with me and my friends, which was cool, and we all had a good time. Well, after her newscast was over, I got a text saying she was really tired and was gonna go to bed. I replied saying I hope she slept well, and asked if I could call her the next day. I got no response, and her gay friend said that she had been seeing another guy recently, but that he wasn't sure how serious it was. This was surprising. What was more surprising was that a little later, I got a text from the girl saying that I was a "really nice guy" and "maybe we can get coffee sometime." What the fuck?
So, trying my hardest not to sound like a whiny little bitch, here's my question:
Why didn't she just come out and say that she was dating someone? And why did she even bother to give me her number? I'm like most young American guys, in that I know almost nothing about the female psyche. So any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I highly recommend it for those of you who haven't had the pleasure of Mr. Whedon's witty story, and Mr. Cassaday's sublime art.

That, or she just plain old fashioned, doesn't know what she wants. Women tend to over think things more than men do, and we often make wild excuses for our behaviors when really their just selfish or overzealous. I apologize on behalf of my sex!
