coming of age

i saw Lucifer once when i was seven
as in fallen as in from heaven
he told me we live as prisoners in strife
what has God done for us
look what he did to Christ
deep in the belly of the beast we sleep
protected shepherd and sheep
i saw Jesus once when i was eleven
as in the son as in from heaven
he told me fear is not a sin
questioning his will is
crucified he watches his children
out of innocence's we give in
ignorance is our only true religion
i saw myself once when i was eighteen
as in broken as in mean
i told myself retribution is only shot away
even without God in my heart
i could still pray
even without the devil holding my hand
i could still cause pain
even without a cloud in the sky
it could still rain
and even without anguish
i could still go insane
out of the void you could see serenity
...i saw nothing once when i was twenty
