Euro 2004 kicked off today with a surprise result for Greece but tomorrow is the day that counts. For example in 2002 when England played brazil in the world cup the streets will fall silent just as they did then, a silence only disturbed by the cheers and the near-misses of the people in the local bars following the game. I find it a unusual and yet fascinating time, its the only one of two occasions where we as a nation stand absolutely together as one as for 90 minutes the world just seems to stop and nothing really matters except the final score and that we settle old ones. The other occasion is during royal ceremony and yet not everyone likes football and not everyone likes the royal family but when it comes to occasion we're all drawn in together as one in celebration of being nothing more and nothing less than English.
