i just returned from my trip through japan and hong kong and have the following thoughts to share:

five reasons to love japan:
1) its cleanliness... you can lick the streets and the government sponsors a 'homeless' area in tokyo where residents receive a tent and basic amenities.
2) urban style... not sure how they afford it, but all the girls look like they just walked off the catwalk of a couture show and the boys seem to look to england for their sense of fashion and sideburns.
3) the hotel we stayed at in atami... it was a traditional japanese hotel perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the water... the rooms were covered with straw mats -- we slept on the floor -- and relaxed in a bath house for the evening. dinner was a series of sashimi, miso and hot pot dishes. what a way to spend a day...
4) san-x toys... finally found all the cats, dogs and fruits i could fit in my luggage at a store in ginza. everyone will be getting a sushi cat toy / stationary for christmas.
5) the girls... along with their cuteness, a sense of style, modesty and politeness won me over in a big way.

five reasons to love hong kong:
1) the miyazaki promotion going on in the NTR (subway system) -- laputa / castle in the sky, totoro and spirited away watches for $10 through december.
2) NTR's "safety with the powerpuff gifls" -- for example, 'always take care of the elderly' features buttercup helping the mayor off the escalator... or, 'hold the handrails' has bubbles and blossom holding on for dear life... these promos are posted all over the subway.
3) enough shopping to make you sick... reminds me a bit of kalverstraat in amsterdam, where shops continue for miles. the difference in HK being that the clothes is fairly cheap and fits a skinny asian boy like me so well. obviously, the stores are for toursists, as there were numerous sherpa coats and scarves in store windows, which is pretty strange, considering the weather is pretty humid in HK year round.
4) the cold drinks... all sorts of fruit drinks at every street corner -- fresh coconuts, watermelon juice, mango and strawberry creations -- perfect antidotes for the humidity of the streets.
5) aside from menus at chinese restaurants, everything was in english, which made it easy to get around. japan was a different story -- i'll certainly have to familiarize myself with japanese before i visit again.
