Happy...er..... New Year.

This week's been a bit of a grind for me.

It all started because the previous week I asked for a raise. Not a token raise but something that reflects the added responsibilties I.ve got with my new position at the warehouse. My reasoning was that this is a job that needs someone who is willing to stay with the company for the long haul, not just a couple months till something better comes along.

Fair enough. Then pay me enough to afford to live here. I'm too old to be living paycheque to paycheque and there is no reason why I should. I've seen the monthly sales reports and know what our overhead is.
Well....long story short my supervisors, while not disagreeing that I could do with more money, were a bit shocked by me asking for $3 an hour more ( goes to show you the small amount I'm making now) and still haven't given me an answer. One even went as far as offering me extra work on the weekend, at staight time of course. Sorry Bob, I don't want more work....just more money for what I'm doing now.

I don't think I'm being greedy. It's just that the way I see it, once I leave my parents again in a few months time I have no fucking reason to have to come back here. That also means no more situations like Andy or Chuck. If the best the company can offer financially to me is a future with shity apartments, second hand clothing, being constantly hungry and the ever present worry of whether I can pay my bills then "Sayonara"

Which brings me to the grind.

On the same day I asked for the raise I ran into an old co-worker from years ago. I got talking with Corrine about our jobs and I told her that even though I really liked the work and the people I worked with, it wasn't enough for me. We exchanged email addresses and promised to keep in touch.
Mondy comes along and I get a letter from her asking if I'd like to pick up some temporary work at the software company she works for. Figuring , what the hell I should start saving as much as I can for a move out of the city if I have to, I said sure. Probably some janitorial work or something.
Boy was I wrong. I'm now working a 29 hr week shift in Customer Support for this place.
Seems the company launched a couple of new products without increasing the support staff and consequently they are swamped. Now I get to answer questions or direct them to right people. Fun stuff.
Funny thing is....they've started me at the wage I asked for my raise to meet at my full time job. Plus, and big plus, there is talk about this temporary position becomining permanent full time.
Not wanting to burn any bridges, I 'm still working at the ware.....oops, I mean "Distribution Center". So by the time you factor in my getting to and from work the last five days I've spent 18 hours a day doing work related stuff.
The supervisor at the software company and I set up a reasonable schedule for me so from now on it should be a little easier. Tuesday and Thursday's off so I can go to Aikido which I started doing again the beginning of the year. Plus I'll get a little more sleep those nights.

So it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. If I do get offered the fulltime position I'm going to go back to my bosses at the other job and ask for an even bigger raise, telling them what's up. (As of right now, I'm keeping quiet on this.)
Part of me wants them to say no.The only people who they'll be able to get to replace me will end up costing them a lot more than I asked for originally. Not that I think I'm hot stuff or irreplaceable but that most people who are confident enough to do what I'm doing now have a sense of their own self worth. The guy who trained me and whose job I'm doing got $20000 for 3 months work.
If they try and do it themselves.....I shudder at the thought. I only make it look easy.

Anyways, it's going to be pretty much hit and miss when I'm here but know that I am thinking of you guys.
biggrin
