Chicken or Egg?

When contemplating the great question:
"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
it is important to remember
that the egg is inconsequential:
just a thin shell thing covering the hen.
So then:
the chicken or the chicken?
Which is the beginning?

That one chicken comes from another, we know,
so why ask the question?
Why spend time pondering
what's obvious, what's right before our noses?

It would also be erroneous to assume,
though,
that we're asking why chickens and things reproduce;
we would get nowhere fast
asking why we have sex;

No, the best thing to do
(if you can stand the gloom)
is look to the other end:

Which came first, chicken or egg?
