I recant my earlier post about not EVER shopping with your mother-in-law. You just have to shop for things you BOTH actually like. She got all excited to go clothes shopping with me, and has wanting to do so for weeks. It's great, because I absolutely ADORE the retro 80s/ retro 60s style of clothing, and during the 60s she wasn't much younger than I am now. It took her back in a happy way, to a time before Doyle...

Now for a little history, Doyle is my father-in-law. My husband and I haven't spoken more than three words to him in the last 3 years. My mother-in-law actually left him back in 2005, around the time my second child was born. During their whole marriage, he was a spoiled brat (he was also an only child with an abusive father and a doting mother). He would often put his own childish materialistic desires above keeping food on the table. When my husband was only 2-ish, Doyle became a stay-at-home parent because he couldn't find a job that was "worthy of him". That's when the abuse started. Not just verbal abuse either... My mother-in-law kicks herself now for not leaving his ass sooner. But having been in abusive relationships myself, I don't put any blame on her. When you're in a situation like that, more often than not, you don't even realize it, and then you feel trapped or afraid. It wasn't until she was 53, with 2 grown children and 3 tiny grandkids, that she realized once and for all that he wasn't going to change. He hit my sister-in-law across the face in full-view of her 6-year-old son. That was the last straw, so to speak.

Now going shopping with her again was a scary prospect, but I HAD to get out of the house today. Once we actually got down to the Rookery, she lightened up so much. It was just like shopping with any of my other girly friends. She, like any other grandmother, loves spoiling her grandkids. Baby Druid got new shoes, Zen got a really cute "lazy pirate" outfit, and Luna got a gute cotton summer-dress. Both of the toddlers also got rain-coats, and she got me a gorgeous past-the-knee sweater. I was a bit shocked, but Chris has a unique philosophy among mothers-in-law. Once I married Daniel, I became another of her kids. If I left him, I'd always still be like one of her own children. She worries like a mother, lectures like a mother, and lends advice like a mother. I am only beginning to realize what kind of family I married into. But it is a real family. Unlike my own.

My family, with the exception of my parents, are all back-stabbing false-friends. My grandparents have screwed my parents over for money and ruined any chance of owning their own home they might have otherwise had. My mother's sisters both have their own special places in my heart... the place reserved for those I whole-heartedly despise. Jennifer, the youngest sister, tried to rape me when I was 16. She even tried to have her boyfriend (who didn't know she was married) talk me into joining them for a threesome. According to Shepherd Book, she's going to the "special hell". Jennell, my mom's older sister, was always very maternal, until she went insane. Now, she accuses me of showing her underaged children porn on her computer, and showing them raunchy pictures of her Naked, drunk and dancing on cars as a teenager. She said my cousins told her these things (and much more) and I refuse to believe that. My cousin Ruby and I have been best friends since she was born! She may be the one other person in my family that deserves redemption.

But My husband's family are actually there for eachother. They stick up for you, help you out when you need it, and are willing to give you the shirts off of their backs. This is the kind of family I wanted. The kind I used to believe I had...

Mother-in-law, Chris, has been listening to my music. She even had some of the CDs I wanted to buy myself burned onto her computer already! Weird... The way my husband talks about her, and the way she acts when she's around people like my sister-in-law and Doyle, or around HER parents, is a completely different person. She's really a trekkie, a comic-book junkie, a computer nerd. She listens to the Eagles and Annie Lennox. If it weren't for the occasionally overwhelming religiosity, she'd be really kick-ass! Last night we actually got a little tipsy, listened to Voltaire on Myspace (his music videos on there are AWESOME!) and looked at my Dita-Von-Teese book ... "Fetish and the art of the Teese" . LMAO. Who'd've thunk. tongue

I can't believe I got drunk with mymother-in-law, listened to Goth music and looked at PORN! .......OMG.... I really CAN corrupt anyone! wink

Sorry this was a tad long... I'll be posting more pictures very soon. Daniel is getting back from Greece in a little over a week, so I'll have my camera back. YAY! I admit, I am a camera-whore.
