After reading yet another medical research paper on yet another failed drug trial for nerve damage, I again wonder at the morality of banning stem cell research. Stem cells are extracted not from babies as some people believe, nor are they the products of abortions as others have espoused. Stem cells are extracted from the byblows of in vitro fertilization. There are something like a half million fertilized eggs frozen in clinics around the USA. The "snowflake" children program espoused by some as the solution has managed to generate 81 kids after over *30 years*. Yes, 2.7 kids per year *TOTAL*. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of thousands of people who could be helped by stem cell research. In animal testing, they've severed spinal cords of mice and *fixed them* with stem cells. They've rebuilt hearts of mice that have had heart attacks. (OK, they gave the rats heart attacks, then rebuilt the heart muscle.) Livers, intestines, etc. I'm not talking about SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficient) mice that don't reject anything. Just normal fully functioning mice. Research would be able to do that in humans relatively quickly. So, embryos that would be incinerated as medical waste could be harvested for their life giving powers, just as we harvest people for organs now. In return, your failing kidneys, drug abused liver, or damaged spine could be repaired... I just don't get the reasoning behind not doing anything with it.
