An understanding of the importance and the use of battle dress is an important element of any sailor's career. Wearing battle dress effectively can save a sailor from serious injury or possibly even death. The time for battle dress is never really appropriate for any other time besides GQ and sea and anchor detail , when fighting fires, but it's intention is to protect the sailor from snagging, for example, their uniform on a piece of protruding equipment. Each element of the battle dress has a specific purpose and function.
Battle dress is used to turn your working uniforms, utilities and coveralls into safety uniforms when fighting fires, by keeping your skin protected from flash burns. Proper battle dress exhibits several characteristics: all buttons are buttoned in the front of the utilities, the coveralls are buttoned up and zipped up all the way, the second button is buttoned on long sleeve utilities to prevent heat from the fire from coming in to the uniforms and burning you, and pants are tucked in to the socks to keep the heat from entering the pants and burning your legs.
Battle dress is required when the general alarm sounds. Battle dress can also benefit the sailor by making it less likely for their clothing to get caught up or snagged on equipment, hatches, and water tight doors.
To effectively go in to battle dress one needs to be in proper uniform, uniforms that fit and socks that will allow the bottom of the pants to be tucked in to the sock. Also not having all of the buttons on you utilities could also hinder your abilities to get in to battle dress. A clean uniform plays a key role in battle dress, if your uniform is not clean the uniform might be more susceptible to igniting when you come close to flames there for rendering battle dress useless and ineffective for mission readiness. In addition to not having the correct socks, all of your buttons on your uniforms, and having a clean and squared away uniform you are not only endangering your life but the lives of your shipmates and all of the citizens of the United States of America. There fore letting the United States of America be over run by fascists communistic dictators where every thing you say and do is controlled by a single person, that will outlaw reading and writing turning this world in to something out of 1984 or Animal Farm .
Now with this profound understanding of the importance and the use of battle dress as an important utility for every sailor, one should strive to achieve excellence in this area of the Navy so that you do not let down God, your country the Navy, your shipmates or yourself. By setting the example with your mannerisms others will strive for this same life of effectiveness and will to get things done.
