The weekend was pretty tame. I spent Friday recovering from Thursday. Saturday I went hiking out at a state park. It was nice and overcast and no one was around for miles. Then Sunday I cooked and watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I found it really disappointing. I finished Barbusse's Hell yesterday as well. It is the story of a man who goes to a hotel room and accidentally finds an eye-hole up in the wall that goes to the room above him. He spends a few weeks in the room, watching a variety of life's scenes: love, death, birth. It starts out pretty shockingly good, then drifts toward some naive desire to write the absolute truth. It becomes really French, in a bad way. It has been called a turning-point in French literature (written 1908), but I'm not sure what sort of turn it is.
