I feel horrible. I extended an offer for an interview to a man, and on his way down to the interview, he was involved in an accident. His wife is in critical condition, he is stable but still in ICU, and his son is dead.

Why you eel bad then? You offered the man an opportunity, and something tragic happened which you had no responsability or involvement in whatsoever. Compassion is good, but not if it makes you feel responsible for things you shouldn't, mate.
