The book is an ongoing effort for me to read. While I was already familiar with some of the worst of our nation's history stemming in part from having read Leopold's Ghost and a related book I can no longer name, she has managed to concisely describe historical trends and pressures which illuminate not simply American failings of the past, but, human failings. Failings we've recreated for ourselves and our neighbors and failings we continue to struggle with. Consider also, A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide by Samantha Power.
