So here is what happened and is what is going down.
This is a blog in a series of future blogs that will describe my Technology Crisis from Initial bad news to (hopefully) conclusive happy news. If you are a technology geek, feel free to add your input along as my saga continues. So here it goes:
Preface:
These are the stats of my MacBook and OS configuration before the fall.
2nd Generation Intel Mac (C2D / 2.1)
160GB Hitachi Hard Drive
Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x (cant remember what updated version, doesn't matter anymore)
Intel GMA Integrated Chipset
I do not have any of my Mac OS X Installation CD's.
I am in Iraq and can't receive mail because I am leaving relatively soon as most of you know.
I am the only person out here with a MacBook for some reason.
Anyway...
I was just on my MacBook minding my own business a couple of weeks ago and running three programs. iTunes, Safari, and GarageBand (minimized). I was searching the internet and for the first time ever my MacBook slowed down. Yes, iTunes even started cutting in and out. I was really surprised because this only used to happen on my Windows computer so what did I do? Pressed the off button. When I powered on my MacBook again, I got the starting chime and a white screen for 5 minutes and then a blinking folder of gray with a question mark of death. My Hard Drive was either corrupted or totally done, but how could I find out?
So I came to terms that all of my data was erased, even if it wasn't but I couldn't find out although I did try.
SO this guy goes on tiger direct and purchases a new SATA hard drive with 200 GB instead.
He then goes on ebay and purchases a Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD. (This being my fuck-up for reasons defined soon.)
ANd then I waited. In the meantime, I learned how to replace a Hard Drive on my Mac and Boot the OS from a CD, use Target mode on another Mac to check the contents of my information on my drive, and how to use my time to do other shit like play more guitar and sleep.
Yesterday, my HD and OS X DVD came in. I get word that I am not allowed to receive mail anymore. My Leopard Upgrade DVD is actually an UPGRADE DVD and needs Tiger to run correctly. My original HD is fucked so there is no was Tiger can be recovered. I sat befuddled for a while and contemplated sending my MacBook back home and calling it a day.
I then remembered a way out.,,
Linux.
I got to researching exactly what I needed to do to get Linux on my MacBook from a completely erased HD...
To be continued...
