Good bye, Minneapolis!

Hello, Boston!

It will be sad to go in many ways. For the most part, Mpls has been good to me. Its a fun town with great people, even if its a little to "clean" for my taste. And perhaps most importantly, Its were I met my wife-to-be. Minnesota is surprisingly progressive state (at least in used to be ...). But at the same time I have quite a few less-than-happy memories about the place that will keep me bitter for a good long while. Most of them have to do with grad school and Minnesota drivers. Shockingly, despite living her for almost 8 years, I've never ventured outside of the Twin Cities (outside of that one trip to Northfield to play soccer). I never found much reason to leave though. My girl doesn't like camping, which pretty much kills any reason to leave the cities.

Boston will be a great adventure. I've lived there briefly and have visited many times so I know the city fairly well. I've got great friends living there already and another two who are moving there in a month, so I won't be suffering from the lonely new city blues. We'll see how much free time I have once the postdoc really kicks in. In any event, I'm looking forward to a fresh start and a new chapter in my life.

Now the hard part is getting our sorry asses there. Nothing like driving a slow-ass moving van cross country. At least we can stop at my parents in Detroit on the way. We've still got a ton of packing to do, which is what I really should be doing right now.

With that, I will sign off from Minneapolis, as my next post will be from Boston in week or two once we are settled.

I guess you won't be seeing this for a while. I hope your move goes as smoothly as possible.

The show on Friday night was great. One of the best Pietasters gigs I've seen. They came on and announced they would be playing until they weren't allowed to anymore, and they came through. They played every song they have ever recorded. (except the ones they didn't) They also did a cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together", and what seemed to be a couple of new tunes.

Opening acts were Riki Rocksteady (Tight, but a little slow for my tastes) and Mass Hysteria. They are like the little brother of WBT. The two bands used to share members, but not anymore. Mass Hysteria's sax & guitar players used to be with WBT. We've seen them play a bunch of times and they are a decent band (the kind you like to see as an opening act) but unlike WBt who have grown out of the eternal opener slot, it seems like these guys aren't quite going to make it. The singer is a young woman, and as much as I wish there were more female vocals in modern ska, she has some growing to do. She has a nice voice, (almost like Caz from Checkered Cabs) but relies too heavily on vocal tricks like that little growl-y thing jazz singers used to do.

On another topic, I just got word that the Providence Roller Derby clubs will be having more bouts this summer. The first of which will be on Sunday July 3rd. They will have fireworks & everything. There is a team forming in Boston, but they're not sure if they will be ready in time, so it might just be the two R.I. teams again.

My friend said that they were supposed to take on the NYC team, but they backed out because they felt the RI teams didn't have enough clout, deciding instead to go to Minnesota. I told her that I had a friend who went to the Minnesota bouts and that if you weren't moving to Boston, I'd have you spit on the NYC teams.

OK, that's enough. Let me know when you get to town.

Thank you
