I have recently been involved in some talks that ended up more kind of into a debate when someone told me that Greta Thunberg was being manipulated by some ecologist lobby and the ideas she developped weren't her own and that she lacked personality. I have this several times already at what seems to be used as an excuse to bring her down and reduce the problem to a political fights between different parties and tendencies. But they're missing the point. I don't care that she may or may not be manipulated by some ecologist party or by her parents or given some pre-made speech... What matters to me is the message. And a lot of people seem to ignore that on the simple behalf of their political preferences. So what is she's manipulated? the facts still remains. The facts are that we've pushed the limits way to far and are now in for some toubles. Its now scientifically proven that the temperatures are rising, so yes, maybe it is also a cycle (frozen era/volcanic era etc) but human activities are nonetheless responsible for a decent amount of these events. I am part of a generation who has witnessed the extinction of several species, has seen many others with an endangered status. Part of a generation who has witnessed 2 major nuclear catastrophes (Chernobyl and fukushima) without even counting the numerous nuclear incidents (like superphoenix in France, the leaks of some others in ex-USSR...) and some more we'll probably never hear about (like tiny little incident when only local population is being told to eat iodin pills). Part of a generation who has seen nuclear tests being pushed on by French predisent Chirac (yeah he's dead and many people paid him tribute.... short memory like all the shit he'd done went into oblivion...) in the pacific island of Polynesia, underwater testings, abandonned military supplies (and nuclear weapons) in ex USSR (submarines rotting under the ocean with warheads...) the burrial of tons of chemical (and nuclear) waste in African countries and south Italian area (Calabra). I am part of a generation who has seen as well many wars and genocide (2 gulf wars for let's be honest financial interests and control over oil fields) (the rwanda, the serbian & croatian conflict, the afghan-russian conflict, and what could appear as the new cold war and premices of thirld world war between Korea-Russia and USA). I have seen the ground and sunk of several tankers (only a few listed here: the MT sanchi close to the Japanese shores, the Rena in New Zealand, the MT solar1 in the philippines, the Erika in France, the infamous Exxon Valdadez in Alaska.... in addition to many oleoduc and plateform incidents and spillage of tons of gallons of petroleum. I could ramble on and on... I was raised in the countyside and have been careful about the environment since I was a child caring about the animals, observing the species in what was my local playground back then, like the salamander, newts, etc.... and was already scared seeing plenty of pounds dissapearing to be turned into constructible lands or farming fields. I have seen the rarification of those same salamenders, which are very sensitive to pollution. I have seen some open and salvage discharge, some birrial done illegally by local farmers.... People say I'm pessimistic but I consider myself to be realistic. You know what's the common point in all this? Human. Human being. We act like we can control everything. We act like we are wise and the ultimate evolution in species. Well, we don't. In fact we have very little control over what we do. We have no idea how to dispose of the nuclear waste so we dump them into the oceans or burry them underground in a nice cement coffin for future generations to deal with. We go to war or create wars for profits, for oil, gold, diamonds mines, the old colonialist spirit aint dead yet believe me. What France, UK has done (and still are doing) to African countries can easily compared to what the USA has done in South America or with the Middle East... The problem is that this world is led by multinationals and politicians and people have little power of decision and little say over it all (or at least that is what we think). I am part of a generation who has witnessed withing a couple years the collapse of both the communist and the capitalist regimes. I remember some people debating over the fact that the communist regime couldn't hold, that is was fake... etc etc and a few years after, when the crisis hit the fan and the whole banking system had to be saved by government in order to avoid worldwide crash, the capitalist regimes showed its limits and gluttony. I still believe in an alternative, but I doubt I'll still be alive to see it. I am very often depressed to see how little involved new generations sometimes seems to be and on the other hand I see some very promising initiatives. I can't help wondering how our world would be like if the CI hadn't supported dictadorships in many South American countries (we could have had some left wing governments elected by their people) instead we've had the contras, the operacion condor, the cuban crisis, the vietnam, nicaragua, the irangate & the Sha ... There are many books, comics or movies I could recommend on these matters. Point is: there is no planet B ,there is no life B. A few people holds 90% of world's wealth, multinationals rule the world and dictate how to behave. Human value shows little interest to them, they are governed by greed, they are more interested in profits and bringing benefits to their shareholders, no matter the cost. This is just insane. I am dreaming of the day where I'd see people down in the streets, people urging and pushing the governments to say stop to this madness, to show would could really be in control. This is no democracy anymore. We elect them and then they go privatise every agency and lead on a very selfish policy always favoring the same circles and classes... The earth will go on when we're choking to death if we keep going this way. Other species will adapt. who knows, maybe it's good riddance! Until then keep stuggling. I am still open to discussion, so whoever wanna talk, debates, get references, trade and share ideas... feel free. (Sorry about how confused this may appear, and for all the mistakes I have done, I'm writing this as I think while I have a little spare time)
