I just got back from watching Her. It was a great. Spike Jones writes and directs wonderful and insightful movies. Ever since I heard about the movie I was reminded of a book I read in college about the future of technology, specifically when computer will be able to think for themselves. The book is called “The age of Spiritual Machines” by Ray Kurzweil. In the book he writes about computers in the past, present and his predictions for the future. The book was published in 1999 so the predictions started for the year 2009 and moved on from there. Sometime still in our future he hit upon the idea that everyone will have personal assistants that are computer programs or operating systems and after a while people be romantically involved with their computers to the point where human/human relationships become rare. Her is about the time when this kind of thing starts to happen. But what the movie is really about is what is love and what is a relationship. Most people in the movie embrace this idea quickly but there are still people that find this strange and even wrong. Me being relationshiply challenged, can see this happening to me if the AI seams real. I started writing a blog about romantic comedies and how they lead people to believe that relationships start through crazy adventures but does that actually happen in real life? Not to anyone I know and definitely not to me. Truth be told, I have no clue how to actually find that special some one. All the ways that the people that I know got together (long time friends, met at work, etc) does not seam to work for me (all my friends are either in relationships or I cannot see us getting together, same at work). I seam to be rambling now and this turned into something different than what I thought it was going to be. If anyone is still reading this I would love to hear what you have to say. Is this just me or do some of you feel the same?
