This is more a workspace to get out somethings in my head...bear with me, this isn't complete thought:

Hebrews 11:1 says "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen"

What if the 'faith' was enough, the substance or evidence might not be important, nor what the 'faith' was?

Why do we as the human race 'need' religion, faith...whatever?

Me thinks:
a. religion brings a sense of right and wrong...
- which gives us a standard to say who is right, and who is wrong
- gives us guilt
- without guilt, you are a pyschopath, by definition (right?)
- a world filled with pyschopaths is a world without law (no right or wrong, no law)
- a world without law is the definiton of chaos
- chaos = the ultimate evil (the devil himself? hell?)

b. religion gives us a sense of purpose
- what does this life mean without it?

c. religion gives us hope of immortality
- if I'm 'good' now I will live forever?

I don't know about a) above. We could have order without "right" or "wrong" as defined by a religious belief, but that "right" or "wrong" would be defined by those with 'power.' Might makes Right. So maybe religion allows the otherwise less powerful to have a chance. God says you have to let me work for myself instead of being your slave.
