The winter holiday season has always been a special time for my family... a time when we decide what religion we are going to play at this year. Oh we started with the basics. Hanukkah for dad some years, Christmass for mom. My sister always had to have decorated vegetation whichever holiday we were celebrating. For a couple years in the middle, Mother decided we were going to celebrate the Winter solstice with a ritual called breaking of the darkness.
Why we feel the need to celebrate anything at all is a mystery to me. It's as if we must have some excuse to spend money on each other. Why not just call it family appreciation day, and stop with the bullshit.
This year my father made up a new religion to celebrate. It's called the holy parallelogram whose corners are made up of my father, my sisters french tutor, my dog and the Dude. Whatever, it serves it's purpose to bring the family togeather each year for an awkard gift filled couple of days.
The presents I got this year were more thoughtful than previous years. Mother got me a sundial necklace, my sister got my chocolate shot glasses, my brother got me a set of very portable flower vases, my cousin (from the extended family round robin gift giving) gave me an itunes gift card and my father got me a jean sholder bag with a cartoon boy and girl holding hands. The boy says "Does this mean you love me?" and the girl replies "Only for today" and if you know me you know how appropriate that is.

and when mom can find one in stock I will get my Wii
